Greta Thunberg: An INSPIRING climate HERO

What do you all think of Swedish climate savior Greta Thunberg? She took a two week CARBON NEUTRAL boat trip to the US because she doesn't believe in planes. None other than Barack Obama said "Just 16, Greta Thunberg is already one of our planet’s greatest advocates. Recognizing that her generation will bear the brunt of climate change, she’s unafraid to push for real action." Isn't it incredible to see such a young figure take such a bold public stand against Climate Change? I am AWED and INSPIRED by this young lady's COURAGE and BRAVERY!

I mean, she's not wrong. It's obvious that humans are having an impact on the climate and that we're heading toward some sort of disaster.

Not much I can do about it, though. That's why I have my bunker near some fresh water out in the remotest parts of Idaho.

It's obvious that we're headed toward some sort of disaster? That's the thing--it's actually not obvious that we are headed toward disaster, and that is the key point. The West has made incredible progress the last 40 years on air pollution and our technology can probably handle incremental changes to the climate. If that is true (and I believe it is), that has huge policy ramifications. Because the difference between "we are obviously headed toward disaster" and "humans can adapt to incremental changes" is the difference between a $92 trillion climate change plan and incremental progress.

Fair enough but if the objection to the climate change folks is a Malthusian one (ie. World can't support population past X, but wait!, technological improvements have made it possible), what are the technological improvements that will mitigate global warming/climate change?

I mean air quality in China is total shit but people still live there so it also isn't strictly about survival. I'm assuming most people would prefer clean air.

Air quality in China is shit BUT is also rapidly improving.

There are many things that can be done to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Sea walls, hurricane construction standards, better resource management (i.e. for droughts), better land management (i.e. to combat wildfires).

Continuing to reduce America's CO2 output and allowing technology and public policy to effectively mitigate incremental changes to climate is far, far less expensive and destructive than turning the American economy upside down in a way that likely won't even impact the climate positively.

My problem with Thurnberg and with the Left which says, "We've got to do SOMETHING" is that it is predicated on the lie that we aren't doing something. The Western world has shown incredible improvement. As I've said before (not my original idea), if climate change were really an existential threat to humanity, the most effective policy would be to go to war with China and India to destroy their economies.

Stunning and brave. I wish she talked more about how climate change disproportionaly affects pansexual and genderqueer trans-women of colour though. Fortunately once Trump is removed next year, the Democratic Party will save the planet with the Green New Deal.

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

To be clear I’m not a “climate denier,” but how does former Pres. Obama figure the next generation is going to “bear the brunt” of the problem?

If he means President Warren will enact really economically disastrous policy that won’t help climate change, then I guess I can see that.

How is she getting home?

I've honestly wondered this--for climate change summits and hearings, why don't these people show some actual leadership and, ya know, use Zoom or Gotomeeting? I think the real answer is that they (specifically, the rich people who attend these summits) use these meetings to rub elbows with other powerful people and that they really don't care that much about the climate. Is that a cynical take? Maybe. But it might be true. Men pretend to be interested in women for sex, so what makes us think people won't pretend to be interested in climate change to rub elbows with other powrful and influential people?
