grooming question - shaving
hey all, I'm hoping to get some advice on shaving. There was an old post from 2013 at but the technology has evolved.
I've got thick dark facial hair so most razors don't cut it. I've used a Fusion 5-blade which does a decent job when fresh, but the blades do dull quickly. I'm tired of buying and throwing out so many cartridges. I've been looking to switch to an fashioned DE safety razor, or to try out some of the newer type of hybrid electrics - like the Philips OneBlade or Remington DuraBlade. Has anyone advise to offer re these 3 options? Also can any of these 3 be safely used for head shaving as well?
get a DE safety razor, cheap blades (like 10c a piece) and always sharp
I'm mach 3 loyal
Yeah. Me too. For about 5-7 full shaves they are badass (and I usually only do partial shaves around my beard every other day to clean up, so I get ~3 weeks to a blade). While I hate the ridiculous cost, I'm just willing to pay it.
On shaving. Gilette orders their razors from Dorco. Dollar Shave club orders their razors from Dorco too.
I buy from Dorco, it's ridiculously cheap, for the price of gillette, I could use a new razor every day from Dorco. Stop giving Gillette your money.
Also, you can buy a "displosable" blade sharpener, or find one online. You can use the same razor cartridge for 4 months.
Where I DO spend money on is Art of Shaving. Their after shave balm is the best product a man can put on his face. Also their pre-shave oil is really good. I just use the after shave lotion now.
Another tip, I shave before bed, everytime I do shave. No more morning shaves for me. I have a medium beard. It eliminates any ingrown hairs. I don't know why it works, but it works.
Thanks man. Good tips. I did also try Dorco but still got better results from the Fusion. The reason appears to be that the Fusion has its tongs (which attach it to the handle) on the side, so it's easier for me to wash the clumps of stubble out, whereas the Dorco seems to have the tongs in the center of the razor. Or maybe it's just that the Dorco goes blunt faster.
I hadn't tried shaving at night. I'll give that a try.
Re sharpening - I'd not seen that. Good tip. I did get a small scrap of denim and have been using that as a strop, but that doesn't seem to do much, despite internet articles that suggests denim stropping sharpens the blades my results weren't so good.
