yeah I mean I surf but asking for advice on the north shore in january on WSO is like going to swellinfo.com and asking for advice on GS TMT interviews. sure you might run into a couple of people, but the info is limited.

respect the locals, maybe start at haleiwa or makaha, and be sure you've already surfed heavy reefbreaks, pointbreaks, and have plenty of foam. it's NOT for beginners.

haha yeah no true that. i figured id ask at least for the hell of it and see. nah im not a beginner, been doing it since i was a kid (im 24), just have never gone to hawaii yet and getting the itch to finally do it.

have you surfed hollow DOH waves in less than 5ft of water? not being a beginner is one thing, but being ready for the north shore in peak season is a whole different conversation. if Hawaii is your first big surf trip, wait. hit up other spots before you tackle the promised land, you'll break less boards, get less injured, and maybe even get a wave or two.

recs for other places before hawaii:

  • nicaragua/el sal/costa rica during july-sep (wet season gets heavy)
  • oaxaca (they don't call it the mexipipe for no reason)
  • bali
  • cali in fall (particularly LA/OC/SD)
  • south africa
  • basque coast (mundaka to hossegor)

sorry to be a curmudgeon, but hawaii looks a lot more inviting than it actually is, and I don't want you to get in over your head and either not get any waves or worse, get hurt/killed. you can absolutely paddle out at pipe on a 10ft (hawaiian) day even if you've only seen hurricane swells up to 8ft in jersey. getting into a wave and not getting killed is something else entirely.

I was in Oahu five years ago and the place to be seemed like north shore. Seemed like more of a local spot, and from what I remember hearing that was the place to be.

Also if you go to Oahu make sure you go to the shrimp truck with a ton of signatures on it. Off the top of my head I think its called Giovanni's or something like that.
