Housing in NYC

Incoming SA at a BB in NYC. Since I come from another country (and study in a LCOL city), I have no idea when/how to find a sublease in NYC for next summer. I'm absolutely horrified by the idea of getting scammed, since I'm self-sustaining right now and a scam would deal a huge blow to my savings.

Any insights on how early on I should look, and where to find listings? Also if anyone wants to room with me I'm down to discuss (clean and respectful af Asian male)
