How cheap can you go?

Folks, I hope you all had a great holiday. During the holiday, I socialized a bit and was fortunate enough to get some EPIC stories on RICH going CHEAP. All the stories are authentic because I was either told by the very person or was there witnessing. All my sources are “new money” immigrants living in Manhattan in case you wonder.

Guy 1: young, in his early 20’s, typical brat who has a dad paying everything for him to study and live here. Has changed a couple of “exotic” cars (think Ferrari, Lambo kind) already since he moved a couple years ago. Dad could care less (probably too busy humping his multiple mistresses back home).
What funny is that he bragged to me that he never needed to “buy” clothes in nyc. Why? Whenever he needed to get some new ones, he just went in to do shopping. After wearing each of the purchases for one day only with tags on, he sent them back to the store and asked for a total refund within a 30 day frame. So no money to spend on new clothes and every day is a “new” day. He thinks he’s smart. Classic, let’s just hope he used a fair amount of deodorant.

Lady 1: Old, very old. Her daughter is a wealthy 50 something working in real estate of manhattan. The mother and daughter live in their 4 or 5 million apartment downtown. The daughter has never owned a car living in nyc for decades. (quite a smart move I would say). Her mother is far better: she loves going to her daughter’s upscale social events or parties mostly with business partners or clients. Whenever she goes, she’d bring enough plastic bags or so to make sure to bring home a lot of leftovers. Also, she enjoys dumpster diving in her affluent apartment building and constantly carries home “treasures”

Lady 2: In her 60’s. Famous. Tycoon. Billionaire(in us currency).has a 5 million apartment in manhattan merely for her 20 days per year stay for business. Also has a 10 million house in CA for kid using during college. When I was visiting the manhattan one, I happened to see a little something. She was right short of time to go to a meeting. Before leaving home, she didn’t want to waste the last drop of tea even it would take her extra minutes to return to the kitchen and pour some water in. She had to down it, completely and totally. This is not cheap in my book. As the only of the three, she won my respect.

Cheap or frugal, you name it. I wonder if you guys have any story of your own or others which can top these? The day you find yourself not as rich as you would like to be, maybe it is time for you to think again your “life philosophy”? lol

pennies make dollars, dollars add up. One should never let having expanses of wealth keep you from wanting to save money. Especially if these people are new wealth, they know the value of a dollar. However, not impressed with the kid scamming the clothing stores. That is just trashy...

Not to nitpick, but someone who has $15 million in virtually unused real estate isn't what I would call cheap or frugal. Maybe she was just thirsty.

I wonder if you know a thing called real estate investing. Well, then what's frugal, maybe you can tell us?

I know that a personal residence that generates only expenses and not income, is not an investment property.

Frugal Example 1: there was a billionaire in my hometown that drove himself around in a ten year old domestic car. That's frugal.

Frugal Example 2: Illiniprogrammer

Frugal 1: are you from Omaha NE? Frugal 2: can't judge with limited information. A rusty honda is not sufficient to say anything. Frugal 3: You?

Right,

Guy No. 1 is really a thief, "renting" the clothes he ends up returning. Lady 1. There is nothing wrong with taking restaurant leftover food home. If she looks for food in the dumpster though she is nuts. Lady 2. Could be frugal. At least on the surface. She could be saving on tea leaves but wasting on real estate, art, and who knows what.

Winners bring a bigger bag than you do. I have a degree in meritocracy.
