How do I find an a apartment and roommates in NYC ?

Will be living in NYC full time next year ( Start date August )

How do I find an apartment ?

Where I’m from, typical apartments are 4 bed 4 bath but I cannot find that here in NYC

I ideally would like to have my own bathroom but know that can be a challenge.

Any tips on how to find an apartment, how did you find yours ?

Additionally, how do I go about finding roommates? Am from a different city and interned somewhere else too so I don’t know anyone in NY

Finding an apartment and roommates in NYC can be a bit of a challenge, but with the right approach, you can navigate the market effectively. Here are some tips based on the context provided:

  1. Don't rush to sign a lease: The multifamily market in NYC is currently experiencing a tipping point on supply vs. demand. This means that rents are softening daily. So, don't feel pressured to sign a lease right away.

  2. Avoid luxury rentals through brokers: If you're hunting for a luxury rental, many of them are being leased through the building's office itself, meaning you won't have to pay a broker fee.

  3. Start looking a month before you need to move in: The market for finding an apartment in NYC is fast, so there's no point in seriously looking until a month before you need to move in.

  4. Have a budget in mind: A solid amount to have saved up is around $5,000. Most apartments will want one month's rent as a security deposit.

  5. Be ready to make a quick decision: When you find an apartment you like, you'll need to say "yes I want it" right away, otherwise, they usually get taken quickly.

  6. Have cash ready for 1st and last months, plus security deposit and broker fee: For a $2000/month apartment, you'll need to be ready to cut a check for around $8-9000.

As for finding roommates, you might want to consider looking for roommate threads on forums like Wall Street Oasis. You can also use social media or roommate-finding websites to connect with potential roommates. Remember, it's important to find someone you're compatible with since you'll be sharing living spaces. Good luck with your search!
