How Much Money In Web Development?
I'm wondering how much people make per hour (or project) on developing web sites for small companies? I know this isn't WSO's forte, but I have noticed a few users mention that they do it in the forums.
Also, how long does it take one to learn the skills for making websites?
I'm thinking about learning, in order to make some supplemental income, but figured I'd get some info first. Thanks in advance.
Problem is it is incredibly competitive these days with everyone and their brother capable of building a basic webpage. Go check out craigslist -- a number of people there will build a website for you for a flat fee. I checked a few years ago for shits and giggles and I think $1,500 was standard for a generic site.
It's hard now if you're just starting out. Freelancers from india are willing to get paid $8 for something you want $200 for. It really depends on how good you are. If you're an excellent programmer, something upwards of $100/hr, but if you're just learning, you'd have to charge a fixed rate on a per-project basis.
There a lot of things you need to learn, and spend time on to become proficient. Namely, you need to have photoshop skills, html, css, and ideally php/database skills. Then depending on the size of the company, you would need to learn about security measures, payment processing, etc. All of this can take several years to learn - and unless you're an all-star I don't think the payoff is worth it. If you want supplemental income, you would be better off coming up with an idea for yourself and executing or hiring someone to develop for you rather than starting from scratch.. web dev isn't exactly lucrative or easy
Yeah, you guys have a point... Maybe I'm better off looking for other ways of supplementing my income...
Rather than focusing on web development, learn how to program apps or themes. One of the best strategies I've seen is someone developing a kick-ass Wordpress theme and giving it away for free, but charging for support and updates.
Or you can look at what Brian Clark did with the Genesis Framework (which looks really slick but is actually pretty redundant programming once you develop the master template) and he's making money hand over fist (>$100,000 a month).
yea man like I pm'd you do some local mobile marketing..... its awesome and easy
Thanks for the advice.
Thanks to you too, I'll look into it.
