How to manage political ambitions in the UK while working in finance

In America, due to how their elections are set up, a successful banker/lawyer/tech entrepreneur can try their hand in the primaries and hope to win the ticket for their respective parties. In the UK however it seems like you have to at least be somewhat involved in politics for quite a while to even have a shot at becoming party leader.

You just can't put up your hand in your 50s and join a party in a reasonable position(can you?), they'll most likely relegate you to a barely useful role with no chance to get promoted. Rishi Kunak happened to pull it off even though I don't see him becoming prime minister or mayor of London in his lifetime.

I already have a kind of successful entertainment career so who knows what that might grow to by the time i'm in my 50s since I don't plan on stopping so maybe I wouldn't have to campaign as hard initially.

I suppose the first step would be to join a party, after that everything gets blurry, I still want to work in finance for as long as possible but would like to be fairly active in politics, how would you do it?
