Hurricane Earl
Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up. Nobody ever thinks of New York City as a potential target for hurricanes- we haven't been struck by one in 70 years, but it is a possibility every hurricane season.
This time around, there is a chance that Hurricane Earl might make landfall in New England. NOAA is projecting a 20-30% chance that tropical-storm force winds hit New York this weekend. Although dramatically less likely, were a storm surge to hit New York Bay, scientists suggest it could cause a dramatic storm surge, flooding the subways and wreaking a great deal of havoc on the city.
In particular, Northeastern hurricanes have a history of moving quickly and changing direction without a whole lot of advanced warning. It's probably not going to be anything serious, but it never hurts to be ready to evacuate.
