IB M&A.. or Luxury Goods
Forgive me in advance for my mindless rant, but if anyone could give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it.
The job that I wanted most during my early teens was a sales role in a local jewellers. I applied for that job religiously, every time it became available. All I wanted to do was sell watches, but I never got the job. Last year I had an idea for a luxury tie & accessories brand. I day-dreamed of the engraved mahogany, gold-hinged boxes my cuff-links would be sold in, they were they cause of many sleepless nights. I am highly driven to work in luxury, whether it be fashion, pens, cars, jewellery, I am passionate.
In November of last year I interviewed at GS for a tech internship (I'm currently a Computer Science student). I made it to the final round of the process, but I completely messed up my final interviews - I think it's because deep down I didn't want it. Anyhow, GS was the first IB that I had heard of, and the research that I'd done had led me to become incredibly interested in M&A, and since then I've been set on pursuing a career in it. But everyday I apply to M&A/CorpFin internships and I think to myself "why am I doing this?", and I haven't even got my foot in the door yet. Based on what you guys say, I feel like I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I seem to think I would. It's not the endless days of stress or the politics, I just don't think it's for me. I'm trying to get away from Computer Science for the same reason, I had maintained since I was ~11 that I would study Computer Science, but now that I'm here I realise it isn't for me.
I'm planning on going to business school after my undergrad to do a MiM. This'll be the time when I specialise in finance or luxury brand management. Should I give up on my M&A dream? I feel like I have a natural skill for branding & luxury products, and that my strengths relate well to LBM. However, I don't think any of my strengths apply well to M&A, I become disengaged just thinking about it.
What do you guys think? Give up on M&A/IB?
