Scams and particularly online scams existed before COVID.
But it appears to me that it has only been since COVID that they have grown at an accelerating rate and have essentially led to a global online scamdemic.
I think this is because although there was a global move towards digitisation and e-commerce even before COVID, COVID only helped to digitise things much more and contributed to e-commerce being more popular than ever. Now scams are rampant everywhere on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and pretty much every online platform and not just crypto scams but loan scams, job scams, phishing scams, fake friend scams, romance scams, social media impersonation scams and many other types of scams.
They are even coming from accounts of friends whose social media accounts have been hacked. Ever since COVID there have been lots of scams which hack and take over people’s social media accounts to promote investment, crypto, bitcoin and/or investment scams and possibly even other scams through which they endorse a fake fraudulent investor and write scam messages to the victim’s contacts, friends and followers. I have no idea if social media account takeover scams existed before COVID but I’m pretty sure that if they did exist they were nowhere near rampant as they are now.
I live in Singapore which is one of the safest countries in the world but online scams are at all time high here and have been very rampant for the last 3 years.
I almost wonder that if COVID never happened then whilst online scams would still exist, would they not have been this rampant as they are currently are and have caused us to currently be in an online global scamdemic?
I just wanted to ask people’s opinion regarding this.

There's a sucker born every day, and someone willing to take advantage. It's always been that way, they just migrate to whatever technology/innovation that is new or confusing. There were plenty of scams before COVID, and there would still have been plenty if it never happened.
