If you had a magic wand, what would software do for you?

Learning how to code and need idea for side projects. What would make your life easier as an analyst or a senior deal team member? I think all the low hanging fruits like FinancePrepGPT is boring - and I don’t believe bankers will ever intentionally outsource the technical and intellectually stimulating parts of their job (which is modeling). So what’s left?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some innovative software ideas that could make life easier for analysts and senior deal team members:

  1. Streamlined CRM with Finance-Specific Features
A modern CRM tailored for finance professionals, featuring:

    • A dashboard with real-time industry updates.
    • Inputs for financials, sector-specific data, M&A activity, and deal tracking.
    • A clean, non-bloated interface to avoid the clunkiness of enterprise tools.
  2. Document Management & Admin Automation
Tools to reduce time spent on repetitive tasks like:

    • Preparing boilerplate documents.
    • Managing signatures (e.g., integrating with tools like HelloSign).
    • Tracking option grants and cap tables (similar to Carta but more finance/PE-focused).
  3. Deal Tracker App
    A centralized app to manage:

    • Buyer lists, working group lists, and timelines.
    • Diligence status and schedules.
    • Collaboration across teams with real-time updates.
  4. Python-Based Automation Tools

    • Scripts to scrape industry data from APIs (e.g., FRED, Bloomberg) and generate reports.
    • Dashboards for macroeconomic data or earnings call analysis (e.g., NLP to count phrases like "nice quarter guys").
    • Automating repetitive Excel tasks like refreshing data or running regressions.
  5. AI-Assisted Deck Creation

    • A tool that drafts the first cut of pitch decks or "Key Exit Considerations" decks using precedents.
    • Analysts could focus on refining the narrative and checking key data points instead of starting from scratch.
  6. Customizable Financial Modeling Tools

    • A lightweight app that integrates with Excel to provide shortcuts, templates, and error-checking for LBO models, DCFs, and other financial analyses.
    • Could include features like reversible modeling or scenario analysis with a click.
  7. Interactive Learning Tools for Analysts

    • A gamified app to practice Excel shortcuts, financial modeling, and PPT skills.
    • Could simulate real-world deal scenarios to help analysts learn faster.
  8. Data Visualization Dashboards

    • Tools to create visually appealing charts and graphs for presentations.
    • Could integrate with Excel or other data sources to make data storytelling easier.

These ideas focus on automating the mundane, enhancing collaboration, and improving efficiency while leaving the intellectually stimulating parts of the job intact. If you're coding, starting with a Python-based automation tool or a simple deal tracker app could be a great side project!

Most Helpful

Send out thoughtful / creative cold messages to people I would love to network with during the after hours of my job. ~100-200 emails a week during working hours with the ability to sync my calendar availability to schedule coffee chats during lulls in the week / early evening hours.

Not sure how this could be coded but I would pay for a good chunk monthly service like this. Outsource this time consuming part of networking for people in roles like consulting / IB / PE etc.
