Immigration Lawyers

does anybody have any recs for immigration lawyers? Work at a HF that hasn't had the need to sponsor anyone in the past and now is willing to sponsor me so they told me to just go and find a good immigration lawyer. Any recs? Cost not really a factor but my boss asked me to be a bit mindful

We use the database of AILA to find decent lawyers.

- make sure to get references

- interview the lawyer just like you'd screen a supplier

- please be aware that the lawyer works for your company and NOT for you. the interests of your company and yours should be aligned, but please be aware that at times, they are not!

- make a list of requirements you have, and then compare them with what your employer wants - any differences should be discussed before approaching the legal firm

- if you have a larger network, ask around who has used what kind of 3rd party before

- if you don't know who to ask / where to look - here is a trick: check the public PERM filings, they black out the personal data, but the legal firms are visible. so you can see which firm works with what lawyer!

There is a pervasive (and wrong) stereotype that an immigrant needs to have a H1b before applying for resident permanency. There is no requirement to have a H1b visa. However, you should discuss with the company if they are willing to get the green card straight away. Some companies might not be willing to do it because H1b gives them certain advantages.
