My impression is that basically a bunch of communist farmers are pissed that they can't maintain their rent-seeking, extractive strategies anymore in the face of free market reforms.

There's a number of complex farm bills that do a lot of things to help farmers, but certain aspects of these bills harm the livelihoods of middleman/leech type farmers. Unfortunately, those people have plenty of influence and they've essentially convinced a significant percentage of farmers in Punjab and neighboring states that the bill harms them even though it actually doesn't. To be blunt, the state/states from which most of these farmers come from isn't known for being the most intellectually advanced state in the country and most people there are farmers. It's not exactly difficult to twist their opinions to go along with an agenda. And of course, the Congress party is trying to take advantage of the situation and use it as an opportunity to defame BJP and the Modi government.

My favorite part is how hardcore leftists on my Instagram feed are uploading stories about this and how the "western media isn't covering it" as if some large-scale socialist revolution is happening.

I like to slide up on those stories and ask those people to tell me what's actually bad about the bills. 9 times out of 10, it's dead silence/getting blocked or some weak argument against capitalism.

Yeah like all of India is intellectually advanced? You clearly have a hatred for Sikhs...who have done so much for India with no acknowledgement. Educate yourself and your bias. These laws are harming farmers all over the country, not just Sikh farmers. Don't be a bigot, all of India is intellectually challenged to be fair. Look at the current illiterate prime minister.

I have no hatred for Sikhs buddy. A big part of my family IS Sikh and Punjabi, I would kill myself before hating on my own family or their identity. It's an agrarian state where most of the people are farmers, there's nothing wrong with that but it's just a fact. Do me a favor and analyze the laws and tell me how they're hurting farmers badly. I don't think you can really make a rational argument that all of India is intellectually challenged. As for PM Modi, he has a masters degree from Gujarat University so not sure how he's "illiterate".

The bills are out there, easy for everyone to read. That being said, you're right that the censorship isn't good and the brutality against the protestors is disgusting too.

"Agriculture has gone from accounting for nearly 50% of the economy to just 15%, meaning millions of farmers already have trouble making ends meet in this shrinking economy".

Lol. Absolutely none of that makes any sense. Like 50% -> 15% of the economy automatically means that agriculture shrank? As far as I know, Indian economy grew very fast over the last couple decades that agriculture probably actually grew.

Can't believe most people are incapable of basic arithmetic.

Hey fellow Canadian, you might want to spend some more time trying to understand the situation.

Canada, along with other developed countries, have complained that India subsidizes their grain exports on the global stage. This is because India overproduces grain (wheat and rice) above their domestic needs. This continued overproduction is due to the subsidies that have been in place since the 1960s in India where they set a minimum price for farmers instead of allowing the free markets to do so. This is exactly why the government is trying the change the system and bring in more private corporations. Free markets / capitalism ftw.

Good article for you to understand what's going on:

India has some of the lowest yields in the world and use outdated growing and storage tech. Because farms are tiny and scale farming is basically banned.

basic reform by Modi but people up in arms because it could change their way of life. A bunch of candlemakers protesting light bulbs

I'm sure there are political reasons for the riots.  But look at riots in the Netherlands today, protests in Russia, US storming of the capital, BLM riots, etc.

If covid had never happened, do you think half of these events would have occurred???? I think there are valid political issues in each event but the anger from covid is making people boil over and go to the streets rather than stay home and be mildly upset.
