Iowa husband shoots, kills escaped inmate who held him, wife hostage

This old man got some big testicles

(CNN) -- An Iowa man shot and killed an escaped inmate on Tuesday after the convict held him and his wife hostage in their home, investigators said.

Jerome Mauderly, 71, and his wife, Carolyn, 66, were asleep when escaped inmate Rodney Long, 38, broke into their rural Bedford home a little after 10 p.m. on Monday, said Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation spokesman Mitch Mortvedt.

Long -- who had allegedly shot a deputy pursuing him on Sunday -- woke up the Mauderlys and disabled their landline phones except for a line in the couple's bedroom. He then took a shotgun that Jerome Mauderly, a retired prison guard and farmer, had loaded that night and placed next to the bed before going to sleep.

This 71 year old man just performed a service to society. One less lowlife out on the streets...

"The Mauderlys will not be charged because the killing was in self-defense. They were not injured during the home invasion."

This was the best thing I could have read in the piece. I absolutely loathe it when someone acts in self-defense and in our overlitigious society gets dragged through the court system when the perpetrator was on their property violating the law.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

The fact that this was even mentioned in the article shows how far down the path to disaster we have gone. Why should there even be any question? An escaped convict gets shot in the home of the people he was holding hostage? Only in a blue state would charges be files....

I wonder if we will hear Obama saying: "If I had a brother, he would look like (escaped convict)?"

I have a distinct feeling that the Obama "If I had a ____" will be used at just about every instance like this.

On the other hand I believe Obama does have a brother, whom looks nothing like this guy.

Nice job. Self defence, no question here. I'd do the same thing, and I think a lot of you would as well.

I can't even imagine who wouldn't. What's the alternative?

When you get your CHL they tell you that you can not shoot to kill only to stop, however most instructors will tell you that you can shoot to stop until you are out of bullets. Usually 11 rounds to the chest will stop them and only leave one side of the story to tell.

I still can't believe Obama said that. Like, what the fuck was he thinking? What was that even supposed to mean?
