Is there a time & place for "garbage language"?

“…the ratio of ingenuity to bullshit — a ratio present in every organization and, indeed, every human — was tipped too far in the wrong direction…”

Refreshing article on language’s influence on culture and identity both corporate and personal.

What is garbage language? “Words with a scammy flavor…” e.g. take offline, loop in, circle back, sync up, sticky wicket…. ”As with any scam, the effectiveness lies in the delivery”.

Why do we use it? “When we adopt words that connect us to a larger project — its easier to pretend our jobs are more interesting than they seem… Garbage language permeates the ways we think of our jobs and shapes our identities as workers. Its obvious the point is concealment; its less obvious what so many of us are trying to hide”.

Why does it persist? “It confirms delusion as an asset in the workplace”

Conclusion: “Language is always a matter of intention”

If you're not lighting any candles don't complain about the dark. Here's a thoughtful book by Kim Malone Scott on avoiding garbage language.
