Is this job hopping?

Hey monkeys,

Last time I needed it, you guys gave me great advice. I wanted to run something by you all that might ease (or exacerbate) my nerves. Here is my current situation:

I currently work at corp dev - I got good performance reviews, but recently, I got called out for being a bit distracted at work - the reason is simple - my father is very ill. He is the only non-marital family I have. It’s hard. My company is understanding for the most part, but this job, which was fully remote when I started, is now demanding in-office 5x week, and it has become hard for me. I was thinking of going for a role closer to home or getting an MBA in the area (Texas). My fear is I don’t want to be labeled as a “job hopper”.

For reference, my work history is:

2020-2021: 1 year at balance sheet bank

2021-2020: 1 Year at top BB (took advantage of covid turnover to hop)

2022-2024: The aforementioned corp dev job

If I were to look for a new role, would it be considered job hopping? I honestly don’t care whether or not people on linkedin would look down on me, I just want to get opinions on whether or not I should switch jobs, get an MBA (guessing that would give more free time than a FT job) or just take a bit of time off. Company is downsizing currently, so if I take leave, I feel Ill be fired, which is fine, but I’d prefer a new job or MBA over that, obviously. Do you think recruiters in the texas area would be understanding of my story?

In addition to my work experience, I have a 3.9+ GPA, multipublished author, non-profit board member, 325 GRE (167Q, 158V), and am a mentor to over 100+ individuals through a program I run. Would this be competitive for Rice/UT Austin/SMU?

I want to be a son first and foremost, but my significant other still relies on me financially, so I’m just trying to find the proper balance for my past (father) and future (wife/children)

I think you should aim higher for your MBA schools.

Yes, this is a lot of moving around and will probably cost you some interviews

What is your goal? MBA is expensive and I wouldn't go just to go - especially since your family relies on you financially, I would strike the MBA idea unless you absolutely need to. It's not like you need it to go into IB or anything.

I'd put more focus into your current job and see if you are just going through a personal rough patch. Most finance jobs are 4-5 days/week in-office so I don't think the next job will be much less demanding. At this point you can't leave the next job for at least 3-4 years so sit tight for now, if you see a job you love you can interview for it but don't keep moving around.
