I think student athletes should get a semester stipend of 2-3K depending on sport. They don't have time to get jobs like other students. The alternative would be to let them make money off themselves, which IMO would be an absolute mess.

What's most obnoxious about this is that schools are charging students for the athletic programs. Let's look at the math (from 2010):

-227 division schools -$2,000,000,000 in athletic fees -4,000,000 students

On average, students are paying $500 per year to have athletic programs at their schools. Fuck that noise. Give me the $500 back and keep your college sports bullshit. Let the programs stay if they can break even, if not, they can go fuck themselves.

EDIT: Also, obviously schools aren't create equally. I'd be willing to pay the (average) $61 per year to go to a Big 10 school. But $1,500/year for a Big South team? Give me a break. Article here: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-06-17/how-poor-students-subsidize-un…

The NCAA is a joke. They obviously aren't doing it pro bono, but the athlete-students (and it really is that way at a top tier basketball, football or baseball program) get at most a full ride. These guys are putting in a huge amount of time and at a top football program are bringing in a lot of money, why shouldn't they get cut a check?
