Jussie Smollett

"In a shocking development Tuesday morning, the Cook County State's Attorney's office dropped all charges against "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett, and records of his case will be sealed, in a decision made just a month after a grand jury charged Smollett with 16 counts of felony misconduct."

"BREAKING: Prosecutors drop charges against Jussie Smollett; “Empire” actor will forfeit $10,000 bond payment, have records in case sealed just over a month after he was charged"

"My #CPD tip says SA Kim Foxx’s office is dropping the charges against #JussieSmollett because “he already did community service”. It’s unclear when he actually did that community service."

"The statement did not indicate Smollett had been cleared of the alleged crimes, just that his behavior had somehow balanced out the need to charge him over the incident. The "community service" referenced in the statement was, according to local news sources, done in reference to a separate case or incident."

No words, any thoughts?

its rare to prosecute for filing a false police report. technically, the event happened..not exactly as reported...but the 2 men did have the supplies, and did say the things said...even if it was rehearsed....the action happened...so hard to prosecute...and why bother when there are more serious crimes to worry about.

just google it...you're welcome

This is not news out of Crook County, Shytcago. Just the political machine at work; pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

If the thing that has finally moved you to be outraged at the criminal justice system in Chicago is that a dude got off too light, maybe just sit this one out.

Who said I'm outraged? I grew up in Chitown and remember stories like this regularly with the Daley dynasty and cronies. Pre internet, a newspaper once reported that one of Daleys' kids smashed another kid's head with a baseball bat. Rest assured that the story was buried and the only charges filed were a slap on the wrist misdemeanor for something like underage drinking and a sentence to community service (which I bet he did).

I'm not surprised at all that a well connected suspect walked free out of Crook County.

edit, guess the internet indexed it at some point. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_R._Daley#Brawl_at_Daley_home_in_M…

"We think Jessie is guilty, but we are going to use our Obama card so that Michelle doesn't miss her favorite show. Barack called this one in, and he would rather face the soft media backlash than his wife. Don't ask Rod B. what he thinks about all of this...better luck next time!"

Three thoughts:

1) This isn't on the level, and it's despicable whatever backroom agreements were made to get these charges dropped

2) I have no idea why this is worthy of a WSO post

3) 95% of the people that will comment on this thread are 100x more enraged that Jussie didn't face justice than they are about Travyon Martin, Philando Castile, or Freddie Gray's killers not facing justice.

If this was posted in another forum like the IB or PE I'd be willing to agree but just because you don't agree and liberals are taking loss after loss this week doesn't mean you need to get pissy about a post on a website nobody held a gun to your head and forced you to comment on.

Sorry, I just think that Breitbart or 4Chan is a far more appropriate place for the weekly WSO white grievance post..

Everything you write belongs next to a “what kind of cat” are you quiz on huffington post but we are still open to listening to your idiotic commentary on here.

Completely racist.

Hard crime to prosecute and pretty low level. Also the prosecution basically screwed themselves and a large portion of the potential jury pool by making statements basically trying to say he was guilty beforehand. Just dumb all around. Non-story for the most part IMO. The trying to buy your kids into college story is exponentially worse yet not getting anywhere close to the same coverage..

Seems less a rebuke of white privilege and more a confirmation of 'money and fame' privilege. I wouldn't equate his experience to the average black person in this country. Nor anyone for that matter.

Pissed off at him either way.

Edit: to be clear on what I mean by "less a rebuke of white privilege", I mean that this isn't nor shouldn't be used as evidence against the existence of white privilege.

Exactly. Everyone wants to point to white privilege. Does it exist? Sure. Is whiteness the main factor in social advantage? absolutely not. It's wealth and power. White people have it, but so do Asians, Jewish people, African Americas, Middle Eastern people, and so on.

People that want to solve social inequality and introduce an avenue for social fluidity are hurting their efforts and wasting precious time focusing on race identity. They'd be much more effective focusing on banking, insurance, wage laws, federal and local tax code, trade laws, and fiscal spending. Those are the issues killing them and the media companies paid by corporate sponsors mislead them to believe it's because of skin color while those same corporate sponsors make billions because people are distracted.
