Kidnappers give hostage 500 yuan after learning family poor

TWO kidnappers spent more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,634) preparing to blackmail a family to pay gambling debts, but they learned belatedly they weren’t going to get much of anything because the abducted girl’s family is poor, according to a court in Taizhou in Zhejiang Province.

They even gave the 11-year-old girl 500 yuan when they saw lots of police on the street and decided to let her go. They took good care of the girl and she was in good condition, Legal Daily reported today.

The Jiaojiang District People’s Court handed down prison terms of four and five years to suspects surnamed Lu and Xie, respectively, for the kidnapping of March 9.

Lu and Xie, natives of southeastern Fujian Province, left their hometown on March 6 after renting a car and buying tools including masks. They targeted the girl, walking alone on the street in Taizhou, three days later.

They had planned to demand 1 million yuan, but the girl said her family could not afford a large ransom.

The two had spent more than 10,000 yuan including the cost of transportation, accommodations and implements on the failed extortion. Police caught the pair in Fujian Province.
