LIC as AN1
I was in a shitty East Village walk-up in Alphabet City, and while going out was fun, I didn't enjoy the area as much as I had assumed. Most people ended up Ubering back to other parts of the city, so living nearby didn't matter. Interning at a sweatshop didn't help either.
Going into FT, I was thinking about living in LIC because my office is in Midtown. My commute would be pretty quick, in 15-20 minutes, and the apartments are so much nicer than anything in the UWS / UES / EV. With IB hours, I will probably just get a comped car back at night. Is it a bad idea?
Also looking for a roommate if anyone else is interested in the area.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, LIC (Long Island City) could be a solid choice for your situation as an Analyst 1 in IB. Here’s why:
Commute Efficiency: LIC offers a quick 15-20 minute commute to Midtown, which is a significant advantage given the long hours in IB. Saving time on commuting can make a big difference in your overall quality of life.
Better Living Standards: Apartments in LIC are generally newer and more spacious compared to options in areas like the UWS, UES, or East Village. If you value modern amenities and a more comfortable living space, LIC is a strong contender.
Night Commutes: With IB hours, you’ll likely be using comped cars for late-night returns, so the convenience of LIC’s proximity to Midtown becomes even more appealing.
Social Considerations: While LIC might not have the same nightlife or social scene as Manhattan, your focus during your Analyst years will likely be on work. Plus, you can always Uber into Manhattan for social events when needed.
Roommate Search: LIC is becoming increasingly popular among young professionals, so finding a roommate in the area shouldn’t be too difficult. You might even find someone in a similar industry or with a similar schedule.
Overall, LIC seems like a practical and comfortable choice for your Analyst stint, especially if you prioritize a short commute and better living conditions over being in the heart of Manhattan’s social scene.

Definitely a quiet neighborhood with great transportation option. Nice apartments.
Boring area to live in (IMO) but close access to fun parts of Manhattan / Brooklyn / Queens.
