Just found a job out in LA but I'm not from the area. I've searched through old posts in regards to living in LA but they were typically 2-3 years old.
Would love to hear about 1) where to live/how much to pay; 2) nightlife; 3) things to expect; 4) places to meet people; 5) anything else I should know about.
Any tips would be much appreciated - thanks in advance!

where in LA? LA is a big city dude
Sorry, will be working out in West LA/Westwood area. I've been told to live in Brentwood/Santa Monica FWIW
I highly recommend living on the same side of the 405 on which you work. There are a couple good bars in the west LA area on SM Blvd
If you work in west LA, brentwood would a really nice but cheaper place to live than Santa Monica. But if you work on the Beverly Hills side of the 405 I would look for places to live on that side or even Sherman oaks. trying to go from Bev Hills to Santa Monica from 4-7pm is one of the worst things in the entire universe.

Unfortunately, the rest of LA doesn't seem to have gotten that memo...

Live close to work to avoid the notorious LA traffic. That being said, Malibu is the place to be. ;)
Malibu is not very close to the westside...
The westside (Santa Monica, Brentwood, Westwood, Bev Hills) is one of the best areas in the area. Amazing food, bars, clubs etc. Close to everything. South bay is really nice. Probably the best beaches & much less touristy than Santa Monica etc.. Hollywood is good for clubs, bars, & touristy stuff. Downtown has become a really cool place, staples/LA Live is awesome There are some nice parts of the valley - Sherman Oaks, Encino, Ventura blvd. Northwest you have Malibu then Ventura, Simi Valley, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, Westlake. -- Further northwest: the promise land, Santa Barbara
If you want to know more, ask more specific questions. For example Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Sherman Oaks & Santa Monica are all very close to each other. The difference in rent price is VASTLY different from each of these areas.
Been living in LA for 21 years here.
The nightlife is unreal and you have tons of options. Everything "big" is fairly close to you and no more than a $20-30 lyft ride away. There are a ton of cool bars and spots along SaMo, Venice, and West LA. I'm not sure how young you are but you also live near UCLA and there are tons of amazing food spots all around there and within a 20min drive. Lots of nightlife in Hollywood from your crazy and trashy bars to your upscale spots. One thing to note is that due to the Asian population, some spots are known for "Asian nights." Some people think this is odd but get used to it. You are also very close to Downtown LA and although some people argue DTLA is sketchy/dangerous, it's getting big and coming up big time. There have been tons of little bars and restaurants springing up and attracting a more young and hip crowd.
Traffic blows but you NEED to have a car in LA - this is not an option. The public transportation is god awful and will not get you to any convenient locations. Study the maps well and look for alternate routes (ie. take Olympic instead of the 10FWY). The best part about being in LA is that you are no more than an hour away from all of the other major cities.
Go explore, have fun, enjoy the beautiful people and tons of events that are in LA. I moved up to SF about 6 months ago and I miss LA every single damn day.

Bankers are not as respected as celebs, stay out of the shady areas. LA is like 5% rich and 95% stalkers/wannaberich/poor people/hispanics/blacks
Nightlife is better though but its hard hooking up with barbie models if you're not some actor/singer/producer/dj/etc.

The thing that sucks about banking in LA is driving home. LA banks often have running jokes about trying to figure out who has the most crashes..
The one thing that unifies everyone in LA and dictates life in LA is TRAFFIC.
As such, it is imperative you live as close to work as possible to minimize your daily commute. Otherwise, you will hate life.
btw, just cus your a banker doesnt mean you get bitches in LA. you gotta know ppl in hollywood or be a 10.
I've heard people complain that your world there would be too small, as young professionals tend to only roll around BH, Westside, Century City. But I'd love to hear more about this.

If you have money (young prof) you only live on the west side (century city, bh, westwood, west la, west hollywood, hollywood hills), santa monica, or soutbay (redondo beach manhattan beach hermosa beach venice etc), or oc area (newport, laguna, CDM, etc)
night life is great, downtown is full of bars, mostly rooftop, more trendy scene and mixed environment.
pasadena, to the north, has what they call old town, same as downtown but only bars that are on one street (colorado). good to go with friends not looking to spend alot. very diverse.
beach cities are always fun, but you gotta be used to it. grubby, dirty bars but hot blondes surfing etc.
west la/cc/bh/WeHo is my favorite kinda place. upscale restaurants and bars with of course the best nightlife in hollywood. i spend most my time in hollywood but thats only b/c my friend is a doorman at all the hot spots (now: colony, mystudio, las palmas, drais). i would never drop $ for bottles unless it was a bday/celebration/etc. 425/bottle isnt worth it if your not gonna get any girls, its not like NYC. if your in, your the shit and youll party with the hottest girls in la, including celebs.

-just curious about something. You said it's not like NY, and if you're in, you're rolling with the hottest chicks. NY is very clicky; when I go to a club I'm usually rolling deep with at least 7 or so people and usually staying w them for the night. Are you saying LA nightlife is more free flowing?
Most of these posts are spot on. However, for those that like to get away from everything, live in the hills of the San Fernando Valley (Victory & Valley Cicle, Encino, Tarzana). Nonetheless I find almost all the people that I work with live in Manhatten Beach, but as all the other posts said, what is not to like over there?
L.A. and so cal in general is awesome. I want to live there eventually just to try it out, but are there a lot of opportunities in finance, especially hedge funds? I know oaktree and canyon capital are in L.A. which are very selective hedge funds. And of course the giant AM firm, PIMCO, is in newport beach.

That's true in almost every city, except maybe NYC. It's really tough in Chicago if you're not from the midwest or did not attend a big 10 school.
I meant, even if you get bottles your not gonna get girls. It is very clickish. You can easily get a table, but that doesn't mean your "in".
As compared to NYC, the times ive been there, I think that if you get a table girls will come to you (tell me if im wrong). In LA thats not necessarily true. You gotta be in the Hollywood crowd.
And I think it's much more clickish than anywhere I've been. At new clubs, you wont get in waiting in line/dropping names/being hot/good ratio. The promoter/owner/doorman HAS to know you
If you buy bottles and can't pull chicks then you're doing it wrong... either you're not bringing enough girls back to your table for drinks or you're not drinking enough to make the ugly girls look good

I recently moved from Chicago to LA to join an asset manager and I know, literally, 4.5 people in this town. While weather is to die for, this midwestern girl is currently suffering from a lack of intellectually stimulating conversation. These actor/model/photographer folks in LA are definitely pretty look at, but overwhelming majority is empty headed and can't put two words together.
So I wonder... where do all the ambitious finance/IB/AM/consulting folks in Los Angeles step out for a drink (or twelve)? Where do they network? Are there organizations/clubs/networking events in LA one must join/attend? Any LA networking events one can recommend for women in finance? As in, where are you hiding, smart people with goals and dreams and sh*t? =)

I have been thinking about the same thing for the last week. There is a lot of finance in century city and would guess for drinks, probably, happy hour at some swanky bars there. My firm is in south bay and no real luck here.
