Looking at taking up Boxing and/or Krav Maga

After a chat with an american, and with many countries around the world banning firearms, I want to learn a self defence form to keep fit and know what the fuck to do in a fight should me, my family or friends ever get in trouble and running away is not an option.

I wanted to take up boxing for the fitness aspect, as well as toughening up in terms of taking a hit, and krav maga for brutal efficiency when stuff gets nasty. I prefer this discipline because it assumes no rules, just as any street fight would. I will also consider any other fighting art that has the same assumptions, and worldwide acceptance of being relatively unpleasant.

Does anyone on these forums do either of these sports? What kind of time commitments is required to get to a respectable level? Is it reasonable to consider doing both alongside each other? Does class size matter so much?

I've been taking Muay Thai for ~1.5 months now and I've really been enjoying it. If you are out shape, Muay Thai has the added benefit of being very intensive on the conditioning side of things.

As far as for self defense use, the strikes employed are fairly hard hitting, as Muay Thai incorporates Western Boxing punches, kicks and the use of elbows and knee strikes (can be deadly). So for stand up fighting, it generally regarded as one of the best styles. On the other hand, Muay Thai is useless if someone takes you down.

Personally, I don't see any one form as a silver bullet to all fights. At the end of the day, it is the skill and preparation of the fighter and not the the style they practice that wins the day.

For a class, I would say that a smaller class size is better so you can get more personal instruction from the instructor. Not sure how long you have to train in a fighting form before you are considered "good" at it.

 

Don't stress styles too much. Find a place with a schedule that works for you and good instructors. If you have access to a heavy bag and know proper form, you can get your fitness quotient filled. Krav is about kicking guys in the balls. Very effective. Systema is the Russian version. I was always partial to chin na, the joint locks taught in kung fu. Learn something that won't get you sued.

Man, I remember being at a bar when a fight broke out, and I was next to some moron who put some random dude in a choke hold. I stared at him for a couple seconds, appreciating the sheer stupidity of using a choke hold in a bar fight. I briefly considered knocking him out before I grabbed his arm and pried him off the guy. Ultimate fighter was staring at me as I was staring at him, trying to look tough. He grabbed a random guy in front of him to choke out. Come to think of it, I should've knocked him out.

If that's the sort of shit that worries you, krav works wonders. Kung fu, too. More sophisticated, but time consuming.
