Lyme Disease is NOT Paradise

Picture me, an incoming investment banking summer analyst who just spent the last 6 months Australian Ziplining in Berlin (you don't wanna know). So, as you can expect my physical, emotional, and mental shape is worse than a washed-up Sigma Nu from the University of Tennessee (Think Bethesda, Maryland). After spending the last week at HQ in an undisclosed location (Emerging Tech Hub, not Fayetteville) I noticed that I have a sort of bite growing on my back when I was changing.

Yeah, definitely not ideal. This bite made my back redder and more tender than Schoenbrun pot roast (CPG). It hurts to move and I can only drink Gatorade frost or apple juice (thanks to my Aunt, don't want to talk it will maybe provide more details later). The redness has been rapidly growing each day and reached my stomach. Definitely a situation. To my displeasure I decided to get this checked out.

The kind ladies at Urgent Care kind of freaked out when they saw it and started to run tests for Lyme Disease. Kind of sketchy because I've heard bad bad things, worse things than I can imagine about Lyme Disease. They decide to take out some blood for a blood test and to my discomfort my body shuts down when they start pulling the blood (think mouth sweats, leg sweats, lower back sweats, shaky hand, foggy mind, I essentially black out and faint). After mowing 6 graham crackers and spill my glass of water I pick up my prescription and carry on. I now have to wait a few days for my results and maybe miss the UNC baseball game this week with Yash :( . I hope I don't actually have Lyme Disease because I would actually freak out and never post on this platform ever again.

I can confirm that you need to take your antibiotics on a full stomach or you will indeed throw up on sight.

Someone take me back to the Australian Ziplines. Please.

This is normally the point at which I should advise you to be cautious and prioritize your health. But don’t miss the baseball game with Yash over “Lyme disease” which isn’t even real (if it is, no one, even BlueCross BlueShield, can save you now). You have a once in a lifetime opportunity to network with Yash, don’t let it go to waste. Good luck.

LOL. I assume this is a joke. Lyme is one of the most debilitating non-fatal diseases. If you see a tick on your arm and live in North America (especially the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast), get to a doctor immediately to get tested for Lyme so you can get the powerful anti-viral. Lyme will permanently ruin lives, if not treated in time. If treated timely, it is easily treatable. Though, you're right, for OP it looks like he's waited a bit long, but late is better than never.

Lyme disease is real; this isn't even remotely in dispute in the medical field. If you catch Lyme early, you should be able to eliminate it with antibiotics.

What's controversial is "chronic Lyme", i.e. major symptoms that persist for months or years, especially if it isn't caught early. There's a lot of BS circulating about this, but it seems like something real is going on with these people that isn't well understood by current medical science.

I know people with chronic Lyme. I guess it theoretically could be something else, but assuming it's chronic Lyme, they are out for the count. Avril Lavigne was bedridden for 2 years. She forfeited $100 million(?) dollars in tour income.

I've had Lyme twice in a single year. Both times I recognized a tick on my arm after hiking and both times I immediately (within hours) went to Urgent Care to get tested and both times I tested positive for Lyme. Both times I treated it with the anti-viral medication and was completely fine. Lyme has destroyed so many lives when not treated timely. Do not take it lightly. At this point, I only hike when the weather is sufficiently cool for me to wear long sleeves and long pants.

Contracted Lyme disease three years ago.
First noticed it after having the worst headache of my life after a tennis session.

First went into a hospital, the junior MD didn't recognize the rash on my leg (he was "leading" the Sunday shift).
I went back home and recognized that the rash is pretty much a textbook example of the Lyme disease bulls-eye rash.

Then went on to my local GP to get antibiotics which I had to take for 3-4 weeks.
Eventually everything turned fine, even though my summer was ruined. Disclaimer: these antibiotics make you less UV resistant ...

Definitely treat this seriously - this is not a simple cold or the flu ...
