Mentor/Role Model Birthday - What to Do?
Hi WSO! So as some of you might have seen from my previous posts, I was really lucky in meeting someone in the industry and they opened a lot of doors up for me (I am 18, so they have really helped a lot). Well, they have their birthday coming up and I was wondering if it would be weird to send something/say something. If not, I have no clue what to do since this person is of great means and I doubt any material thing would excite them. So, I was wondering if anyone had some input on this and any advice on what I should do. Would really appreciate some help!
The actual object doesn't matter at all, it's the display of appreciation. If the guy drinks wine get him a decent bottle of wine, if he likes golf maybe get a few fun custom balls, if he likes to cook get him a fun cook book. Write up a quick handwritten card and send it to him, I GUARANTEE that act will not go unnoticed.

Definitely off, there's a guy I consider a good friend and career mentor who has helped me immensely and is only about 10 years older than me but has a factorial of my net worth. I know he likes to unwind by cooking, so for his birthday I got him a cookbook centered around his favorite style of food. Can he buy that book himself? Of course, but that's irrelevant, it shows that you're invested in growing the relationship and understand and appreciate his interests. I would say, however, if you opt to go for a purchase to not go like, bottom, shelf. Like if you get wine don't get him a box of franzia lol

Well, whatever you do gift-wise, make sure you include a hand-written card. Write something short, sweet, and to the point - but meaningful and genuine. It's always a nice touch and older generations really appreciate it.

Get him a hat,mug or some sort of memorabilia of his favorite team and write him a hand written note.
Problem is he owns part of a sports team lol. I'll def send a card but I was thinking of getting an old copy of Barron's - maybe from the week of his bday - or like some unpublished writing of Ben Graham, etc? I know he reads a lot and likes old value investing memorabilia but getting any of these things might be a mission lol.
Week of bday actually sounds like a thoughtful gift alongside a card. I think Barrons, NYT, WSJ and maybe the Economist might have archives that go way back.
You might be able to look up such historical archives for free in a major local library.
Props to you for vesting in the relationship and actually thinking about sending him a card. I like the idea of a handwritten card. At one of my internships I got a mentor who I am still close with a bottle of really nice whiskey, and it went a long way even though he could buy himself a case like a cheeseburger. Every now and then it still comes up over phone calls.
This is likely a lot for an 18 year old, but something classy and nice which will be useful to them is a good idea. I like the idea of an old copy of Barron's or the like. Another idea may be a very nice notebook for him to write thoughts in. Many people keep one on them and you can get a very nice top of the line notebook for less than $100. Maybe this is something that works for you to get him?
