Merging and further name elimination

Hi,

Morgan Stanley merged with Dean Witter, and the new firm was called Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. But later the name "Dean Witter" was eliminated. Why? It looks like Morgan Stanley bought Dean Witter but not merged with it. And there are other examples too.
