Moving to Portland

So I'm moving to the Portland area and I'm a little nervous about it as I don't know anyone who lives there. I can't help but think maybe I should have gone to California, Texas, or NY. Any thoughts on Portland as a city and things to do there? Thanks.

Also thoughts on Portland vs Seattle? There's a cheap train from Portland to Seattle and I have some friends who live up there. Was curious as to the differences.

OP, everyone will rush to make this shit political b/c it's what they do (see the first response) but I think it depends on what you enjoy. If you enjoy the outdoors then I think Portland is a great place to be but, in my opinion, it isn't much of a city. Seattle is much better as a city, it's truly a beautiful metropolitan area. What exactly will you be doing in Portland?

Portland is actually a really nice place. Not a huge city and definitely has a "small town" feel, though. I say this as a lifelong New Yorker. I visited a friend there a while back and it reminded me of my college town but with a lot more tech and modern stuff. Buy a fancy car, make some friends, meet some nice girls, smoke tons of ganja because there's a dispensary within 1000 feet of wherever you are. You'll be alright.

So I’ll be working at a smaller development shop where I’ll be focusing on acquisitions and developments( which is exactly what I want to be doing). At the time I was in the final rounds with a couple other companies and while one company decided to go with someone else, the other one was too early in the process, but my interview did go very well. It was either take this role in Portland or wait out/ keep recruiting. This seems like a good situation though.

Although after I accepted, I was asked to interview by 8-10 other companies, so that’s a bit annoying. However, most of the roles were asset management .

My plan is to reevaluate in a year and see if I want to go to California, since I have strong ties to the area. The other places I’d go are NY or Texas but Texas is a much harder sell since I have no ties there.
