Moving to San Francisco for work

I'm moving from NYC to SF in a little over a month with work and am curious as to the best neighboroods to live in currently. I have seen previous threads and am more inclined to look witihin the Marina district/Northern SF but am open to any and all insights.

Thanks in advance.

Avoid the Tenderloin like the plague. Besides Marina and North Beach, Nopa/Hayes Valley and Pacific Heights are cool places too. Good luck finding a place, though. Rental market is insane right now...

This. There is nothing tender about Tenderloin.

Haight Ashbury/North of Panhandle area is nice if you want an artsy vibe. The neighborhood is like the SF version of Greenwich Village.

Too late for second-guessing Too late to go back to sleep.

Thanks for all the advice. Would you guys recommend getting a studio or taking the craigslist roommate search route? Any realistic ranges for rent on both?

Nice guys may not finish last but they sure don't finish first. Loyalty is not rewarded, it's taken advantage of.

Looking for roommates is a nightmare though. I've been looking to do that for 3+ months and have had zero luck. OP, looking for a roommate? (half serious)

Even a studio in a decent area (marina, pac heights, nopa, north beach/russian) will be well over 2K/mo. SF has always had a steep market, and prices have increased significantly in the last few years. Common play is to find some like minded bros and split the burdeon, otherwise you'll pay out the nose. Until you find said bros, consider somewhere like Mission/Haight which are a bit more vibrant, or even the Castro if you're open minded. I've had many acquaintances stood up or jumped in the Tenderloin for less than a watch, stumbling home from the SOMA. Take a cab or Uber home, and obviously never let the ladies cross Market St. at night, offer them a ride.

Yo, take this piece of advice and don't live anywhere near the Tenderloin. You WILL get mugged. Besides that, the Marina, Pacific Heights, North Beach are all pretty good places to live. Public transportation's not that great.

And of course, if you have a problem with bums and homeless people- SF is not for you.

madmoney15I'm moving there too from San Diego. I'm thinking Chinatown, Inner Richmond, Pacific Heights or Russian Hill. And he's right about the tenderloin, its real ghetto.

Don't live in Chinatown, it smells and you would have to speak Mandarin or Cant to get a place. Inner Richmond is pretty far and commute time will be a factor.

This is discussed every 6 months, not much has changed: Nob, Russian, North Beach, Marina, or Pac Heights.

If I could do it again, I would sublet from someone on Craigslist. Cheaper rent, instant group of people to go out with, and minimal responsibility if you want to dip out later. $1,100-$1,500 per entry level bedroom right now depending on location and quality. Rents are up 30% this year in the prime neighborhoods.

Marina District is filled with lots of young professionals. Honestly, if you're at a BB, you should consider living in the Financial District. The 5 minute walk to work will definitely be worth it at 3am.
