Moving to the Art Industry?

How do people move into art? I'm talking primarily dealers & gallerists. If someone has experience with art prior to finance, it is as simple as moving to a big auction house before spinning on your own? Is the move to go work as the finance guy at one of these major galleries/dealerships?

Close friends I have in this space are already artists/creators of work, and have extensive experience in the sector for many many years/family in the industry.  The directors at art galleries that I have close ties to networked into the roles.  I am not too sure about finance backgrounds going into this area - just know it is highly difficult.

Thanks.

I went into the art industry full time in 2010 as a creator and have sold pieces directly to people and have been in galleries, but haven’t sold through galleries.

Typically, the artist gets 50% of the sale price at a gallery and the gallery keeps the other 50%.

I eventually would like to own an art gallery in the East Village, but it’s just so expensive to buy real estate there.

I’m back in the corporate world now so just have to save money for a gallery.
