I fear for the younger generations in today's world and I'm not usually one to bitch like this but I have two young sons and the amount of shit that gets sent home from my 1st grader's school about non confrontation and bullying frightens me. I realize that bullying has become a massive problem and you know why? Because the person being bullied has no recourse other than to go to a teacher, parent or some other authority figure to arrive at a resolution. This is going to sound like the old man saying "back when I was your age..." but when I was young if someone bullied you, you fought back. Maybe you won and maybe you lost but almost all of the time if you actually stood up for yourself the bullying stopped, even when you lost. I was bullied for about a week in eighth grade so that Friday night I beat the shit out of the bully, and you know what happened? I never got bullied again and the bully didn't bully anyone again. Now the kid who fights back against a bully gets in as much trouble as the bully himself. It teaches an emasculation of people where the solution is to tell a teacher rather than deal with it yourself. I'm not advocating for the OP to use physical violence to get the money back but he doesn't return your texts so you're going to tell the proverbial teacher instead of confronting him about it? Grow a fucking sack and tell the ex-roommate in person to give you your money back.
That's an interesting take on this incident. I was thinking about using the fact that I know where he will be working and I have the proof as a weapon to get my roommate's money back. I am not the chicken here. My roommate is the one that doesn't want confrontation. I volunteered to help.
Remember the fact that he and I have mutual friends. I could do what you said: confront him in public and cause a scene. But the consequence isn't gonna be pretty. I am trying to keep it between he and I.
If he doesn't pay us, I will e-mail the company with all the proof. I am thinking about using this as a threat. Is this a good idea?
Also, now he lives two hours away from New York. Traveling to there doesn't seem like a good use of my time. I am still working on OCR.

Here's an idea: Why don't you mind your own fucking business? Let your friend handle his own problems. For all you know, the guy who is "owed" money isn't really owed anything at all. Sending a complaint to his company is one of the more ridiculous things I've heard in a while.

completely agree with whoever it is that said mind your business. posting the thread is fine if you want advice for him, but don't fight his battles for him, that's even more emasculating than your friend getting butthurt because some asshole didn't reply to his emails. yes, it sucks to not get your money back, but life's not fair.
living well is the best revenge. and if that's not enough, karma is a bitch, the thief will probably lose his job anyway. if he steals money, he'll take shortcuts at work, get busted for securities fraud or insider trading, then become the slampiece of someone named "Bubba" when he's doing time. that, to me, would be well worth a few hundo.
