In the event of an open conflict with Iran? Intense coastal air patrols to pick as many off as possible, and to warn the battle group to circle the wagons.
what if the iranians do the Swarm of Joy and a chinese submarine pops up at the same time? what's the plan for that?
Pretty sure the Aegis system can handle all that and more.
This isn't my specific area of expertise, but I'll give it a go. The reality is that the Gulf isn't very big and it's extremely crowded. Terrain definitely favors the enemy. There are lots of things to be concerned with... coastal defense cruise missiles, aircraft over flights, and small boats operated by the IRGC. Because of time, space, and distance, it's quite possible to be surprised and because of the congestion it's difficult to maneuver. There are indicators that are paid close attention that can provide advanced warning, and there's lots of training involved so the folks are as prepared as possible for the full range of threats.
As for the specific boat mentioned in the article, here's the thing... it doesn't matter what kind of equipment or technology a country has. If they don't use it and train with it, then it's worthless. I have no clue whether or not the Iranians are out putting it through its paces, but from the article, it doesn't sound like it. Maybe the Iranians bought the boat and are trying to reverse engineer it. Maybe in several years we'll see a dozen of these things. Maybe it is a secret weapon, but even secret weapons need a test drive. We'll watch and see what they do with them, and develop our own capabilities and TTPs accordingly. No drama.
As for this whole war with Iran thing, it's not going to happen. It's basic game theory, if they sucker punch us in the Gulf, they'll get crushed (literally) in the long run. If we sucker punch them, we'll get crushed (economically) and it'd be political suicide. And forget about Israel. It can't stop Iran on its own. All it can do is really piss Iran off so forget about that option as well. So there will be a lot of tough talk and we'll do what we can to stall them, but in the end, Iran will probably get a nuke, and the world will learn to deal with it.
Of all the things that could potentially keep me up at night, I can tell you that the ex-British Iranian speedboat docked in Bandar Abbas won't be one of them.
Didn't know there were intelligent people on WSO who could read and analyse stuff like you did there.
You've seen the debate scene in Old School with Will Ferrell, right?
It happens sometimes.
+1 to M. Blank. Level-headed analysis grounded with experience, refreshing.

I came to say that I've swam in the waters of the Persian Gulf and its ridiculously warm.
...Metal Gear!?
Iranian speedboats? Meet AGM-114 Hellfire. Iranian aircraft and anti-ship missiles? Meet AEGIS. Iranian subs? Meet the Virginia class SSN.
It's no question -- shock and awe regardless of what the Iranians have.
why don't we just let israel handle this one. you know, for the $3BB we hand them surely they can do some of their own fighting. and as you have so often pointed out they invent such awesome tech. maybe an army of titanium golems?
Why? Because Iran is a threat to the region, including our allies in the region. Not to mention, Iran is a threat to Europe and American interests in the Middle East (think access to ME oil, though not as much as is conventionally thought comes from the Middle East). We have interests, we had better be involved.
or we can just stealth bomb all their little boats with cluster bombs at the port
