NBA Lockout
Surprised that no one has really mentioned the issue. What do you guys think? Do you see it having any effect upon the fan base, in the sense of deserting the sport?
What about the racial element that has been brought up about David Stern?
Personally, I was really looking forward to the season. The Finals couldnt have gone better and the idiot owners are failing to see the big picture rather then haggling over 2% worth of revenue when considering that a cancelled season (more likely then ever considering the bad blood coming from negotiations) would cost considerably more both in revenue and potentially team values (as many owners are digging in precisely because they want to sell their teams).
Stoked for the World Tour being planned though as London gets two games.
Thugs and crybabies with few exceptions.
College hoops is where it's at. I certainly won't miss the NBA, but we can probably expect an increase in crime rates now that these losers don't have somewhere to be at night.
I enjoy the playoffs but otherwise the NBA could disappear and life would go unchanged. My sports calendar is:
August - January - Football season/world in its proper order October - mlb playoffs/world series February - Dark void/few more months until football March - march madness April - August: infinite sadness/black hole so dark that no athletic entertainment can escape/please let football get here August: Football returns
2012 NBA Playoffs (hopefully)?
The players are getting shafted by the agents in this. The agents have 25-year careers; a good player will play for around 10 years. Agents are looking towards their own best interests instead of the players they represent; therefore players are going to lose a ton of money due to this.
It's really going to kill the positive momentum that the league built up. Most people hate LeBron and Miami, but they brought a ton of attention to the league last year. Not to mention young stars like Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin. This lockout kind of reminds me how the NHL lost a lot of its fan base after the season was cancelled.
The NBA doesn't need to completely overhaul its business model; it just needs to make a few tweaks, like making it so a bad contract won't kill a team's salary cap (hello, Rashard Lewis). The fact that talks seem to be going nowhere and the league may cancel the season is flat out insane; players will not be happy when they look back at this missed season 10 years from now.
I don't think the NBA is at risk of losing it's fanbase like the NHL did. Hockey is not that popular in the U.S.
people will always like basketball, its not going anywhere. same shit that the nfl did. now look how popular the nfl is. even more popular than it was before lol
NBA is crap compared to college-- not the same 'want' and desire. although im biased and went to uconn :P
NBA business model is broken and players don't want to admit it. 22 out of 30 teams are losing money and there is no parity. They need to contract the number of teams and have a hard salary cap in place so that teams like the Lakers, Knicks and Celtics can't buy championships. Small teams can't compete under the current model.
No one will miss Basketball until at least after February, no one cares about an 82-game regular season but I agree that they're missing out on momentum.
Both College ball and Football sucks in my opinion. Why would I waste my time watching an inferior product when I can watch the best of the best ? It's the minor leagues for chrissakes.
List of College Football haters: 1. Aviator 2. Al Qaeda
because, as you said, there is a lack of parity in the NBA and nowhere near as much underdog/cinderella/upset potential going on that makes the NCAA exciting. also, the kids seem to play their hearts out more since they want it more imho
the NFL is amazingly well run compared to the shoddy NBA
wow i cant even understand that there are people in this world who think college football sucks. must be a yankee, viewpoint ruined by terribly untalented teams in the region.
I lived in DC for 4 months one fall and thought i was going to kill myself between Big East games and DII nonsense...so many non-athletic white people on the field (though that the description works well for much of the Big 10, too).
college football is good but i think that NFL is much more intense and athletic all around. therre are many lackluster kind of eh plays in the NCAA compared to the NFL i think. not a hater of it though :) i think that illini said it best when he said its influenced by the region yo ugrew up in.. i went to uconn so im biased towards NCAA basketball being better than NBA, UT/down south football regions will see NCAA football as religion.
A million dollars a year isn't enough pay for playing a game? No sympathy. If a player is really killing it, then they get more, but many of these guys are making more than senior bankers and will not want for anything.....cry me a river.
This isn't the old days where pro athletes had to work regular jobs in the off season so they didn't starve. I look at them like I would any other worker's strike at this point. And these are largely just 20 something kids, in some cases getting recruited out of high school, whining about only being able to buy last year's Ferrari who need a good smack in the mouth.
It's a fucking form of entertainment.
I think the biggest problem is that the NBA is aware they are not as popular as say the NFL obviously. And considering the NFL went through this very thing not long ago and came away with a settlement, that is in fact very similar to what the owners are asking the NBA players for now is bad, coupled with the fact the NFL is light years ahead in terms of profitability.
They can't back down now. Billy Hunter is a douche. He's too concerned with saving his own job rather then reaching an amicable solution.
With the OWS movement, NBA players could not look worse by haggling for 2%, when they could jeopardise their whole season.
Not sure if I am in favour of the talk of getting rid of the salary cap. Would damage the sport further.
NBA sucks. People still watch that shit? Bunch of overpaid cry baby thugs.
NBA players have other places to play and still be paid reasonable amounts of money compared to what they would be making otherwise. This wasn't true of the NFL. That gives the agents and players in the NBA much more latitude in negotiations. There won't be a season this year and I honestly couldn't care less.
