Newb Needs Help

Okay, so I want to start "trading/investing" on Investopedia Stock Simulator. The thing is, I honestly don't know how to get started, so I could really use some advice. How does one go about getting started with investing? Do you just pick an industry/sector from the S&P 500 and just follow all the stocks in that list? Or do you even break it down smaller (because when I look at the sectors on yahoo finance, there's a lot of companies listed)? Also, how exactly does one "follow" a stock? Do you just read as much news about it as possible? Any advice, tips, resources, etc. on this overall topic would be much appreciated.
