Hi, I just wanted to start a thread about events around North Korea such as recent negotiations, sanctions, provocations, conflicts, and others.
The Trump administration sees North Korea as the top national security priority for the United States, according to a senior State Department “All options are on the table,” Tillerson said in Seoul, where he underscored U.S. commitment to Asian allies threatened by North Korea. Tillerson has used his three-country Asian tour to underscore that the new Trump administration is fed up with years of North Korea policies that it sees as all carrot and no stick. "Let me be very clear: The policy of strategic patience has ended,” Tillerson said at a news conference in Seoul.
With the end of Obama's "Strategic Patience", I think it's timely to talk about North Korea.
As someone from Korea, I am a little worried but I also think it's very very interesting how things are quickly progressing. There have been a lot of actions taken during short Trump's tenure and they are nothing I have ever seen before. Chance of a major conflict or a "big deal" seem higher than ever to me.
Peaceful denuclearization deal will be huge as it will actually be a step toward "United Korea" Why should you care? I would especially like people from Japan, South Korea, and China to help WSO parse perceptions there and understand how this plays out. Of course, usual crowds are also welcomed to comment.

It's not just war city2017. Goldman Sachs report predicted that "United Korea" will be the fourth largest economy in the world even surpassing Japan and France. It's a creation of new strong economic power in the region. Peaceful denuclearization and unification of Korea will be not only be a big event politically but also economcially.
Dennis Rodman is visiting North Korea and said that "he is going to do something pretty positive try and open door for Pyongyang"
Soon after the announcement of Rodman's trip to North Korea, North Korea released 22-years old Otto Warmbier who was detained for a few years.
It looks like things are progressing very quickly.
Will Rodman take a role and become a critical agent for a new diplomatic relation similar to US-China Ping Pong Diplomacy? We will find out soon.
Otto has been in a coma for a year, NK was probably only holding him as a bargaining chip, and realized it would probably be a bad move to let him die in their care.
The issue is once NK has nuclear, solid state missiles , nothing will ever change. China will prop them up to keep the buffer between the west and NK will continue to be a bully. There is a reason no nuclear nation has ever been invaded.
IMO, the time has past to do anything. Past presidents Ignored the growing threat and now NK is safe. Pull troops from Korea and maybe China will pressure them to open up.
The US spends so much money for nothing. Plenty of other countries aren't the worlds bullies and they seem to have successful economies and do just fine. We have enough oil, food and minerals to be isolationist.
How about we cut defense by 2/3rds, reduce regulations, cut taxes and watch the US go into pure overdrive economically.
Naaaaaaaa. I'm joking. Let's keep dropping a trillion on defense and making up reasons to kill people under the guise of freedom.
I don't know what kind of value the idea that "no nuclear nation has ever been invaded" has. You are talking about an extremely limited time period, an extremely limited amount of countries that have nuclear weapons, and very low amounts of invasions in general since nuclear weapons began proliferating.
Do you understand why a nuclear regime would not be invaded? Do you listen to the reasoning why we can't like Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc etc have nuclear weapons.
