Norway Travel Advice
Hi All--
My wife and I went to Iceland in 2022. 10/10 trip. Really enjoyed the dramatic landscapes, incredible nature, openness, etc. Looking to carry that focus on landscapes, nature, openness, etc. into our next trip.
We have our eyes set on Norway. We may spend some time in Oslo, but we are not sure yet. We mostly want to spend our time outside of the cities.
For those that have visited Norway, what would be your top recommendations of places to visit or things to see? We will definitely be renting a car. Through my trip planning I have identified some of the more common tourist destinations, but I thought I would ask WSO for tips/recommendations. Anything would be appreciated.
Thank you and I appreciate the help

Bergen - "Bergen is a city on Norway’s southwestern coast. It's surrounded by mountains and fjords, including Sognefjord, the country’s longest and deepest. Bryggen features colorful wooden houses on the old wharf, once a center of the Hanseatic League's trading empire. The Fløibanen Funicular goes up Fløyen Mountain for panoramic views and hiking trails."
Narvik - "If you want to experience the northern lights (Aurora Borealis), the season for that is from November to March. Due to the dark period in December and January, the period from March to June is considered high season for skiing in Narvik."
I've been to Oslo and Bergen. I was planning to go to Narvik to snowboard, but it looks a lot closer on the map from Oslo than it really is. The train ride was super long and I didn't have time to go, but wanted to go. Cheers.
Highly recommend Alesund, went there, take the ferry across the fjords like hjorunfjord (sword fjord), Geirangerfjord, visit the “hobbit houses” summer homes for milk maids, Union Hotel Øye and Path of the Trolls.
Briksdal Glacier in Olden.
Akråfjord and Langfoss waterfalls in Haugesund.
If you’re planning to spend some time in Oslo, even though it’s not overflowing with tourist attractions, there are still a few spots worth checking out. I’d recommend Operahuset, Norsk Folkemuseum, Frammuseet, The Royal Palace, and maybe a nice walk along the Akerselva River. If you’re into art, the Munch Museum might be worth a look, though it’s not my personal top pick.
That said, Oslo isn’t really the best place if you’re after nature and wide-open landscapes. For that, the mountains and fjords are where you’ll find the real magic. I’ve been outside of Oslo a few times, but my experience there is limited. I’m sure you’ll discover some amazing places!
Have a nice trip!
When are you planning to go?
Recommend the Trolltunga hike
