NYC Neighbourhoods

Hey all,

Which are the best neighbourhoods to live in in New York? I would want a very safe area and a relatively short commute to FiDi for $2,000/mo.

Also, are listings like these real? Not sure if they seem too good to be true haha: https://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/sub/d/new-york…

Thanks!

Edit: sorry was unclear - I don’t mind room mates! $2,000/mo budget would include situations with room mates!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some recommendations for neighborhoods in NYC that balance safety, proximity to FiDi, and affordability under $2,000/month:

  1. Long Island City (LIC):

    • Located in Queens, just 1-2 train stops from Midtown and with easy access to FiDi.
    • Cost of living (COL) is lower compared to Manhattan.
    • Nightlife isn't amazing, but its proximity to the city makes it easy to enjoy Manhattan's offerings and Uber back home.
  2. Hudson Square:

    • Rent ranges from $1,500-$2,500, and with roommates, it can be even cheaper.
    • A rich neighborhood but slightly farther from most offices, so consider the commute time.
  3. Brooklyn (select areas):

    • Some neighborhoods in Brooklyn offer affordable rents and a reasonable commute to FiDi.
    • While specific areas aren't detailed in the context, Brooklyn is often recommended for those looking to save on rent.
  4. Hunter's Point (LIC):

    • A nicer neighborhood within LIC, though prices here might be on the higher end of your budget.

Additional Tips:

  • Consider having roommates to reduce costs, as many areas in Manhattan and nearby neighborhoods can exceed $2,000 for solo living.
  • Safety concerns in NYC are often over-sensationalized. Staying street-smart and aware of your surroundings is key.

Everything in NYC is safe, and certainly any area you choose to live in will be safe.

I sincerely doubt that Craigslist ad is honest and accurate.  $27/ft is extremely, extremely low rent. Too good to be true is my guess - probably a bait and switch for another unit, or it's someone looking for a roommate and not actually leasing a full one bedroom apartment.

Unless you're willing to live with a bunch of roommates, or have a longer commute, you aren't finding anything for $2,000 a month, I'm sorry to say

Intern, would you like a pony with that too?

That's a completely unrealistic set of requirements.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

At $2k a month with a decent commute to Fidi (do you mean lower Manhattan?) and you have to live by yourself, check out Prospect Lefferts Gardens. You can still get studios in that neighborhood for that, you're by Prospect Park and close to Crown Heights which is trendy and has a lot of good bars & restaurants.

Go on streeteasy.com and filter for your budget and what you're looking for. There are some buildings on John St and also Maiden Ln in FiDi that are reasonably priced. You'll probably end up in the East Village though for that price range. Upper East Side has a lot of options, but you'll have to take the 4 train down every day, and it gets packed in the morning.
