NYC roommate search

Hey, I'm an incoming A1 at an EB in NYC and looking for roomates. My budget is ~2500/month. Not really sure where to start with finding roommates, so I thought I'd maybe give WSO a shot. Also, any advice on finding roommates would be appreciated. Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips and advice for your NYC roommate search:

  1. Start with WSO Forums: Many users in similar positions post threads looking for roommates. For example, the "2017 FT Roommate Thread" and "SA 2021 NYC Housing Thread" are great examples of how others have successfully found roommates. You can create a post detailing your budget, preferred areas, and any other preferences (e.g., gender, lifestyle, etc.).

  2. Preferred Areas for Your Budget:

    • Murray Hill / Gramercy: Popular among young professionals working in Midtown. With roommates, you can expect to pay around $1.5k-$2.25k per month.
    • Long Island City (LIC): Close to Midtown (1-2 train stops) and offers a lower cost of living. Prices are generally more affordable, but Hunter's Point in LIC might be pricier.
    • Hudson Square: A viable option with costs ranging from $1.5k-$2.5k, especially with roommates.
  3. Platforms to Use:

    • StreetEasy: Browse listings to get a sense of pricing and availability in your preferred neighborhoods.
    • Facebook Groups: Many NYC housing groups exist where people post roommate requests and sublets.
    • Craigslist: While it can be hit or miss, it’s still a popular platform for finding roommates and apartments.
    • WSO Threads: Keep an eye on threads like "NYC Analyst Housing Meltdown" or "SA 2021 NYC Housing Thread" for potential roommate connections.
  4. Tips for Finding Roommates:

    • Be Clear About Your Budget and Preferences: Mention your $2,500/month budget and any specific requirements (e.g., proximity to work, lifestyle habits, etc.).
    • Network with Other Incoming Analysts: Many incoming analysts are in the same boat. Reach out to your firm’s HR or alumni network to connect with others.
    • Timing: NYC apartments move fast. Start looking about a month before your move-in date, as leases are often signed quickly.
  5. Financial Preparation:

    • Be ready to provide proof of income (e.g., offer letter) showing you make 40-65x the monthly rent. If you need a guarantor, they should make 100x the monthly rent.
    • Have cash ready for the first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and potentially a broker fee (usually 15% of the annual rent).

If you’re open to sharing more details (e.g., preferred neighborhoods or lifestyle preferences), you can refine your search further. Good luck with your roommate hunt!

where are you working? area not firm we don't share that. downtown the PATH is great plus you're out of city tax. uptown you will get a lot more in LIC

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
