NYC Roommate Search

Hi, I’m (23M) moving to NYC from the UK in August (2nd year L/S equity analyst at a pod), and looking for roommates. Budget is around $2.5k, but flexible. Thinking East Village but also flexible there.

I’m a clean and easygoing flatmate, but I still enjoy socialising, going on nights out, finding new bars to go to and people to meet etc. Moving solo and don’t know anyone in the city, so keen to make friends as well. Message me if interested!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, finding roommates in NYC is a common approach to managing the high cost of living, especially with a budget like $2.5k. Here are some tips and insights:

  1. Popular Neighborhoods for Young Professionals:

    • East Village: A great choice for its vibrant nightlife and social scene. However, rents can be steep, so having roommates will help you stay within budget.
    • Murray Hill / Gramercy: These areas are very popular among young professionals working in finance. With roommates, you can expect to pay around $1.5k-$2.25k per month.
    • Hudson Square: Slightly farther from most offices but offers a more affordable range of $1.5k-$2.5k, especially with roommates.
    • Long Island City (LIC): Close to Midtown and offers lower costs of living compared to Manhattan. Nightlife isn't as vibrant, but its proximity to the city makes it a viable option.
  2. Roommate Search Tips:

    • Networking: Post on forums like WSO, Facebook groups, or Reddit threads dedicated to NYC housing and finance professionals.
    • Timing: NYC apartments move fast. Start seriously looking about a month before your move-in date.
    • Budgeting: Be prepared to show proof of income (40-65x monthly rent) or use a guarantor (100x monthly rent). You'll also need cash for the first month, last month, security deposit, and potentially a broker fee (15% of annual rent).
  3. Additional Advice:

    • Avoid NYU dorms as they are overpriced ($2.4k/month) and not great quality.
    • Consider subletting or Airbnb for short-term stays while you finalize a long-term arrangement.

If you're looking to connect with potential roommates, platforms like WSO forums or dedicated housing groups for finance professionals are excellent starting points. Good luck with your move and making new connections in NYC!

2500? East Village?  I want to know what kind of drugs you're on because they are clearly awesome.

Let me explain what $2500 or so will get you in the east village: You'll have three roommates, two will live in the subdivided livingroom. It'll be a sixth floor walk up. Your room will maybe fit a full size bed if you really squeeze it. Also, your downstairs neighbor will be a prostitute that's lived there since the 1970s. You won't want to know what those sounds you hear coming from her apartment are.
