Obama and guns
Well, we knew this was coming at some point: http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/biden-obama-might-use-executive-ord…
Obama's response to the Sandy Hook tragedy. Personally I think it's bullshit to use an executive order to in any way circumvent the 2nd amendment. Kind of like the wiretapping extension that recently went through via executive order.
In any case what will likely happen is either 1) a ban on 'assault weapons' and high-cap mags (I already have a stock on ammo for my weapons) or 2) a requirement for some kind of gun registration. I think this will never happen, and even if it did I wouldn't register mine. There are AT LEAST 280 million guns in this country (legal and accounted for, wouldn't be surprised if that number was 400 million) and I'm guessing a few people feel the way I do.
So what do you think guys?
This thread AGAIN?
What do I think? I think you should watch John Stewart's recent response to people like you: http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/tue-january-8-2013-stanley-mc…
It's crazy that in this country of excessive over-regulation, we can't pass any regulation to help prevent gun violence.
The Second Amendment can't really be changed by Executive Order, this is more political posturing on Obama/Biden's part. At the end of the day, anything of significance (such as an assault weapons ban, increased background checks, closing of gun show loopholes) has to come from the legislative branch. Also, the recent Heller decision (2008) by the Supreme Court basically said handguns are allowed in the house, but left everything else open to interpretation, which can only be taken advantage of by the legislative.
This is music to the ears of the Gun Lobby because 1.) gerrymandering has made districts more polarized, meaning certain far right Congressman won't feel any pressure to come to the table (same goes for lefties), 2.) Congress is maybe the least productive entity in the United States and can't even agree to relief aid, let alone a major, polarizing issue such as guns.
So to answer your question, Obama really can't do much on his own here. Looks like another issue that will just be kicked down the road. Our financial system, in my opinion, is not too comparable with Europe; however, our political system is beginning to resemble Brussels more and more...
This all comes back to the same question - why does any civilian need (or be allowed) to have any kind of semi-automatic weapon, shotgun or rifle? They just don't.
Shotguns and rifles are used for hunting, so they do have a place with civilians.
A gun is the ultimate freedom. It is a freedom that preserves all other freedoms we have. If we didn't have guns what is there to preserve all of our freedoms? A piece of paper? U.S. citizens should be able to own anything that an infantryman has. And if you don't think that this country is capable of evil then you are obviously oblivious to the world around you. Just the reminder of what we did to Japanese Americans in WW2 is enough for me to own a variety of "scary" semi-automatic weapons. Fortunately, I also live in a state where I can own NFA weapons(Don't expect you to even know what that is let alone what people have to go through to purchase weapons in this country) which when I have the funds will also invest in.
I remember years ago anti-gun folks would claim that no armed civilian force could possibly take on the US military successfully. Then came Iraq, when about 10,000 insurgents who were only moderately armed managed to bind the US military into a multi-year conflict.
Governments from time to time fancy themselves superior to the people they should serve. A well armed citizenry keeps those impulses in check.
Spot on point. Bunch of guys in pajamas did a good job defeating the USA with only small arms in Vietnam. We did the same thing in our revolutionary war. The right to bear arms is about personal freedom and protection. The left uses crisis to push for further restrictions when the overwhelming statistics show that guns are safe and used lawfully.
If Obama wanted to reduce gun deaths he would focus on the poor, uneducated and crime ridden inner city. Juts look at DC and Chicago and you will see where the gun violence is regardless of how strict the gun laws are. End the "war" on drugs and you will see a drop in gun deaths and violence.
But that is factual and supported by data. Instead we take a school shooting and use it to push for irrational and right infringing legislation.
Go search "School Bus Crash" on Google.

2 dead and over 36 injured in the past couple of months and this was a cursory search. But people want to think guns make schools unsafe. Irrational fear used by the government. Just like 9/11 and the TSA/Gitmo/Dept of Homeland Security.
But the sheep keep crying for more safety and the government happily provides it, all for the cheap price of your freedom and rights. We truly do not deserve this great nation any long.
We all knew Obama has a strong disgust for the core beliefs of this nation. His disturbing un-American statement about guns and bibles during his first election tour should have been enough to warn everyone.
Obama was just waiting for something like this to happen so he could make his mark once again as Carter on steroids. Republicans must hold the line this time and not allow Obama to do anything with regards to our 2nd Amendment right.
If you outlaw guns in this country, the only people without them would be law abiding citizens. Criminals are still going to have and use guns, they don't care about the law; you would only be punishing the responsible owners of weapons.
Simply look at Chicago and DC. But now we are talking facts and truth, not hysteria and hyperbole.
I sort of thought Biden was trolling just to rile up the Limbaughs of the world. An executive order can't take anyone's guns. Calm down, folks!
