Part Time MBA for me? Need guidance..

Happy New Year everybody!

I just graduated college and started working as product analyst for BB's electronic/algo trading. I am enjoying my current role and my manager seems to be invested in me (which I appreciate).

I am still learning a lot and will continue to do so - but I have this urge to do more?

So I am thinking a part time MBA? Take classes at night? In terms of funding it - the bank offers $5000 or so per year and rest would be out of pocket. I did not have any student loans for my undergrad so I feel comfortable paying for it.

I think this is something I can balance - hour wise is pretty good for me (8am - 6pm). Plus, I still feel like I am in "school mode".

What do you guys think? Is it worth it?

(Also if this 'Off Topic Forum' is not the right place - I am sorry. This forum is an active group and I like it!)

No, I don't think it is worth it.

I mainly see two avenues where value can be derived from a part-time MBA:

a) Military - Sometimes NCOs and Officers get shitty degrees on the side as icing on the cake for promotions or something. I've never fully understood it, but heard that it does help. Also, its typically free. I would never taint my resume with a shitty part-time MBA even if I was in the military, but I've met a lot of people (even officers) that just don't get it and think that any MBA is respectable, when its not, but at least it is free most of the time for people in the military.

b) F500 programs - Some companies have programs where they send people to part-time MBA programs as a part of a leadership development program. They pay for everything. Its usually for top performers and after the program is completed, the person is promoted internally. Sometimes a commitment is required (2 years or so) to keep the tuition and expenses free.

I'm not sure how you think this will help your career. If you're going to put down money for an MBA and pay for it yourself, you might as well just go full time and try to jump to a better shop or role, if that is what you desire.

Thank you! Nothing is set in stone - it was just a thought. I do have this urge to do more outside of work though so I am trying to find 'that'.

But again, thank you for your perspective.

Another important note is that if you get an MBA from anywhere, most other schools will not admit you for another MBA. So if you get a part time MBA and then realize you want to go get a better name MBA, many schools won't allow that.

Yeah exactly. It fucks you up.
