Path to NFL/NHL/NBA/MLB Front Office?

As tonight's preseason game at Seattle marks the beginning of year two of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's tenure as GM with the Vikings, his path is apparently 'untraditional' for the NFL's terms:

"The 40-year-old Adofo-Mensah has an economics degrees from both Princeton, where he was a junior varsity basketball player, and Stanford. He is a native of New Jersey, just like Vikings owners Zygi Wilf and Mark Wilf.

Adofo-Mensah, whose first name is pronounced KWAY-see, was a commodities trader and portfolio manager before entering the NFL in 2013 with San Francisco as a research and development specialist."

The more I read on the backgrounds of GMs, the more it seems to be case-by-case. Is there any sort of exit-pipeline into pro sports front-office from finance?
