PC Recommendations

I currently use a MacBook but want to take advantage of windows shortcuts in Excel so I was looking at getting a PC to run windows. I already have the monitor and keyboard but wanted some recommendations for the computer itself. Ideally under $800 if possible.

Laptop or desktop? Obviously at $800 and less we're not talking about a full blown workstation. On top of that, I get it that you're trying to be budget concious. But at that level you're looking at spending the sxame $800 again maybe 18months later at most and repeat. If you can drop some extra coin on it, I'd suggest it because you can make it completely worthwhile. IE, I still use a laptop that's coming up on four years old, but it still handles anything I need work-wise.

I know you mentioned already having a keyboard and monitor. Not about to lean on you, but do think about that those two are the things you both look at and touch every single day you're using your computer. Once you get things settled in, I would recommend to make  sure to upgrade those to as nice as you can afford if they're not already that level of quality. I forget their name off-hand, but there's a keyboard guru lurking around here on WSO that'd give great advice. If anyone else remember's their name, tag 'em and get them in here.

I agree with the mouse, keyboard and monitor(s)--I replaced my smaller one with a 55" Amazon Fire 4k for $300 a few months ago, and I hate the screen door effect.*  I'm about to just ditch it for something a bit smaller but higher quality soon and eat the cost.

Regarding laptop: How bulky are your spreadsheets, and what else will be running?  I basically have a mobile workstation at work (i7, 32gb ram, etc.) because I always gave BBG, M* Direct, Teams, Outlook, a dozen chrome tabs, etc. along with a full security suite and end-to end VPN when WFH in the background.  At home, I'm very happy with an old i5/8gb Surface Pro 6. (that I may have just lost and may be looking to replace with a maxxed out Go 2)  Honestly, Excel alone isn't that heavy-weight unless you're dealing with massive spreadsheets (I had a 40mb one I was tasked with maintaining once) or really poorly programmed APIs.

*oddly I had a high-end 40" 1080P Samsung for years that didn't have it, and assumed this wouldn't either  given the ~50% higher pixel density.  Quality matters I guess.  Despite this the TV is actually really good as a TV, just not great on my desk as a replacement for four 27.5" monitors.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

To clarify, I have the logitech mx master keyboard and mouse along with a dell 27" 4k monitor. I'm just looking for a PC to run in my room, specifically for excel hotkey shortcuts. I'm currently doing IB technical prep so I don't think I need a super powerful PC.
