Well you can disrupt the pocket squares by designing some round ones a half-moon.
You have to be a really good dresser to add a pocket square. Most men are not, and this is the reason I see matching ties and pocket squares effin everywhere. A good rule of thumb is to not wear one to work, ever. You can class up a blazer with a nice white one that just peaks out of the jacket pocket and is folded horizontally inserted parallel to line of the jacket pocket. For example I wear one to whichever Triple Crown Race party I'm headed to. But a pocket square is either really formal or you should be trying to replicate British country style with tweeds and winged tips. Stick with solids, or when in doubt, white.
In your personal life, do what you want. Professionally, no unless it's with a Tuxedo at a Black Tie affair.
I think they look great, however, I have never seen anyone wear one for work. Honestly, guys that you do see wearing them are wearing a suit for a special occasion and feel a need to spiff it up.
never outdress your superiors. I am a massive fan of pocket squares but no-one wears them here so I dont. Recently I wore one once to a networking event and stood out like a sore thumb cause the rest of my team all looked like my underlings including MD. Most people for some reason dont care what they wear so long as it gets by.
I don't wear them. I echo CRE - a good pocket square looks sharp.
But, there is nothing like the sight of a busted tie and matching busted pocket square. It looks really sharp to the people who can pull it off, but real doofy to those who cant.
I figured a plain white one can do no harm to be honest, but it just seems like personal preference at this point. Some of the men in my office don't even wear ties so I guess they feel a pocket square adds something extra.
It is said they'd make fun of you for wearing pocket squares in IB especially if you're in the junior level.

Yes but do not match it to your tie. Only plastic ties are sold with matching pocket squares. It should either match your shirt or be a complementary pattern/color to the shirt/tie combo. I carry one sometimes just to blow my nose and shit cause my wife's a teacher and constantly has a cold. I'm much heartier than she is so it doesn't affect me as much, but it does a bit sometimes.
edit: Oh and you better be sure your shit fits right and your shoes aren't from Kohls if you're accessorizing. Same with tie bars.
