PowerBI/SQL/Azure/Tableau/Power Apps & Automate… in IB?
Currently a rising Junior in college working in FinTech as an intern. I have secured an IB summer analyst position for the summer of '24.
So far, most of my tasks have revolved around creating dashboards, processing data, and creating solutions using related software such as what's in the title. I have been struggling because my background is in corporate finance and financial modeling. I do not know any of these software platforms and the work seems completely unrelated to what I will be doing next summer. My family and friends keep telling me that this is good to see other aspects of finance and to learn these software platforms for the future.
I just can't imagine bankers using any of this… For anyone who works in IB, have you seen these platforms used for displaying/managing data or have you used them yourself in your career? Do you ever foresee these tools being relevant in IB?
I’ve never seen any of these used in IB….however I used them all in my previous career and they’re so easy to learn it wouldn’t be a big deal to pick up the skills if you had to, literally an hour spent fiddling around with each tool and you’ll be proficient to get going, they’re not complex at all and definitely designed to be user friendly
They are not used in IB, but nonetheless, it is solid advice to learn and get exposure.
However, the new tools will all have AI in them, so you wont have to learn how to fiddle with them.
used a lot in AM
You likely won't be using it in IB, but keep your skills up to date and you can BLOW MINDS with it once you get to PE.
Caveat: It's not going to help your day-to-day job
You're gonna be in a board meeting in some Milwaukee-based LMM industrial shitshop someday and their CTO (some 65+ dude invariably named Larry / Terry) is gonna say some bullshit excuse about how he can't accurately track inventory, and you're gonna bust out some straight WIZARD MAGIC on this bitch, describing how you could [trivially] map their inventory records onto the opportunities table in their salesforce, and you'll see his ruddy, wrinkled hands begin to shake.
Slowly and unsteadily, he removes his gold-rimmed bifocals, softly muttering something about "the inventory systems these days..." but you don't care.
You begin speaking in inhuman tongues of SQL and DAX, your voice taking on THE ASPECT OF THUNDERCLOUDS AS YOU DESCRIBE IN MINUTE DETAIL THE PROCESS BY WHICH YOU WOULD NOT ONLY SANITIZE THEIR PART NUMBER RECORDS AND DASHBOARD THEIR INVENTORY TURNOVER KPIS, BUT DEMOLISH THE ENTIRETY OF THEIR MEANINGLESS CIVILIZATION AND HAVE ALL RECORDS OF THEIR NAMES TORN FROM THE PAGES OF HISTORY
You return from your war trance to a state of pleasant wakefulness, a calm warmth engulfing your body. Larry / Terry lies slumped across the pastel yellow legal pad on the conference room table in front of you, dead.
His eyes have been removed, but you can't remember how.
