Pursuing a degree in general business/management as a career instead of high finance
Hi monkeys, I'm looking to start a discussion regarding "normal" jobs in business. They are so normal, in fact, that its hard for me to find any info on them like I can with banking. I am talking about getting a degree in something like "strategic management" or "organizational behaviour" or any of the other vague and random business management majors and then getting those random business jobs afterwards. The benefit I see is having very low hours (30-50) and still getting 'ok' pay of 60-80k which can scale to 400k+ with enough promotions/job transfers. Having low hours gives me the opportunity to do side hustles on the side to supplement the low income and make it comparable to banking TC. This has the benefit of my side hustle growing and turning into a significant source of income as well, which more importantly is an ENJOYABLE source of income. That being said, the obvious negative is focusing on two things at once which is weird. How come nobody does this? Is management promotions too luck-based? Does nobody want to own their work? Or am I missing something glaring? This path seems extremely low pressure. Don't need the highest GPA, don't need to tryhard interview prep, etc.. at least compared to banking.
About me: I recently had my first exposure to building a stock pitch, and to be honest I found it incredibly boring. I have been extremely hesitant about pursuing banking anyways, but thought that the money would be worth it since its somewhat interesting. I am an entrepreneurial person by nature, starting a small landscaping company during high school but I do not come from any sort of wealth so pursuing entrepreneurship as a career isn't the best or safest option for me. I think the flexibility of a normal business job would give me more time to invest into enjoyable side hustles (to hopefully turn into main hustles in the future) like real estate, hardscaping, gym owner/trainer, etc... but I am worried that a random job in Management is too bad to accomplish anything. I never see "regular" business jobs discussed on here, so I'd like to hear your guys' thoughts on if they are viable career options to still amass some sort of wealth.
I think you need to do a bit more research on different jobs. I was a business administration major and then went into management consulting in a corporate finance role.
There is no general business role - you have to start somewhere. Having a mediocre GPA is going to limit your options.
strategy consulting too
Yeah strategy consulting is generally harder to get into than other consulting paths from what I’ve seen. But it seems really interesting.
What kind of banking are you referring to exactly?
mgmt typically isn't low pressure. plus you need to bust your balls, get good at politicking, and master incredibly tedious corporate processes. that said, there are a few management type programmes at like P&G, British American Tobacco, etc etc
I think big4 consulting have this kind of organisational consulting type roles that would fit with the degree you mention.
Yeah there are also Financial Development Leadership Programs in F500 companies.
