Recovering HD, need advice.
So the hard-drive in my Mac crashed a couple weeks after it run out of warranty, but the nice dudes at Genius Bar replaced it for free. Now I have a never backed-up crashed HD with lots of info I could use.
I know, my own stupidity :( my POS college HP laptop never crashed despite being 90% full, so I guess I didn't expect a 0.5 TB MBP to have a HD malfunction.
Well anyways, I asked my company's IT guy if he could recommend a good recovery service, and he instead volunteered to attempt to recover it for me for free.
The guy is really nice and I trust he would do at least as good of a job as any professional recovery service, however, I have a couple of questions:
1) He will be doing it on his personal time, and I know he offered, but I wouldn't feel right if I don't do something in return. I don't want to insult him by offering money, so what would be an appropriate token of gratitude in this situation?
2) Some of the info on the HD is sensitive - budget, strategy, and valuations for my friend's start-up (some of which weren't even done by me), our correspondence about my role in the company, some of the investors' info, etc etc - all of which are a subject to NDA I signed (I got my friend's OK if I decide to go through with this). Moreover, there's a whole bunch of personal files (nothing illegal) and I am sure, robust Internet history (nothing illegal). I am not really worried about anything, but what are some hypothetical scenarios in which this could go wrong?

IT guys deal with this sort of stuff ALL the time. Everyone has sensitive stuff on their laptops -- the IT guys don't really give two hoots about any of it (and they usually don't look). If you're really that nervous, ask him to do it one day after work with you sitting next to him -- just buy a pizza and hang out for 30 minutes while he figures it out.
Reminds me of a funny story: Back when i was in college a friend of mine (chick) asked me to transfer some files to an external hard-drive for her (girls are retarded when it comes to computers). When the files were transferring over, there was one particularly large folder with a bunch of "photos and videos" that took a long time to transfer. The girl turned bright red when a dude with a massive !*$# flashed on screen and she made me swear to never tell anyone about her stash.

Why would that be embarrassing? Although in this day and age of high-speed internet, I just don't understand why people want to waste space on saving that kind of stuff. My embarrassing file is the opus of unsent love notes.

Just tell him you'd like to learn for next time, and sit with him while he does it. Perfectly reasonably request.
