Returning to former employer?

I left my banking job recently for an opportunity outside of the capital markets and am starting to feel some regrets about leaving.

I don't find my new job as engaging and also began to appreciate (more than ever before) the great group of people I had worked with at my previous job (In addition to the higher comp)

I left on good terms with the team and keep in touch with former colleagues.

So I have a few questions

Any boomerang employees out there? Has anyone here went back to their old job and how did you approach it?

Should I make my move and hit up my boss sooner (3-6 months into this new job) rather than later (1 yr+)? I feel I still have room develop other skills and knowledge at my new gig but one part of me wants to know sooner than later

Any advice on making sure I convey why I want to come back?

Email back the boss and be honest. Say that you thought the team was exceptional and you miss a team of high performers and want to return. The sooner the better. Email him tonight.

A former analyst I believe who worked at place long before I did came back after 5 or so years and became our credit director when I started, but that might not be very comparable to your situation.

I would wait at least a year if you can, even if you view it only as a chance to get some skills/experience outside of banking. It would be a question mark down the road only being in that job for 3-6 months. That said totally acceptable to go back and I'm sure your team would welcome you back

I get the notion of the short-stint, but wouldn't that be overlooked if it's transitioning right back to the previous employer, let alone group and role? Assuming they stick with that employer for a solid two or three years at least going forward.

To an extent, but it's still a question mark that goes away if he waits a few more months. I think leaving anywhere that soon just raises flags that you might have difficulty adjusting or didn't give the new role a chance
