Glad he's okay, but why is he fiddling with mail for such a long time with his door open on the street side? The street looks tight and he must know how closely the cars are passing by him. I would walk around to the passenger side and fix up whatever I need there, especially since he's doing this everyday, every hour, greatly increasing his chance of getting struck one day.
