Shedding the extra things

Currently a rising senior and just moved out of my apartment for the summer at school. As I was moving out I realized how much shit I have that I never wear, use, or just do not need. Anyone find it hard to throw out clothes/things even though you don’t use them regularly? Would love to drop a lot of this stuff as I hope to move to NYC post internship. This may be a dumb thread, but would love to hear how anyone went about cutting back on possessions while keeping core fits, hobbies, etc.

Like above, donate stuff you don't ever wear. To find out which stuff in particular, hang it all up with the hangers on backwards so when you do laundry you know which ones you've actually worn.

I have moved apartments / cities more than 10x since graduating from university and it has taught me a pretty clear lesson on accumulating stuff: You need to be both realistic and ruthless when deciding what to buy / keep. Go through your wardrobe and ask yourself if you're keeping something 'just in case' or if you actually foresee yourself using it on a regular basis. Then do this for the trinkets and keepsakes. I used to buy shotglasses in every city / country that I visited. The collection grew and grew and before you knew it, I literally had nearly 200 shotglasses. Each time I moved I would spend hours wrapping them up in shoeboxes and transporting them to my next place. They took up an entire bookshelf worth of space. Finally I decided that it just wasn't worth it anymore and got rid of all but about 10. The lack of clutter (and saved costs on future shotglasses) is worth so much more to me than the display which I hardly ever looked at anyways. Sure, you may end up buying some things multiple times over the years (I think I've bought 3 separate dumbbell sets), but that's better than the alternative. For the stuff that really matters like my high school diploma, it is sitting in a box in my parents' attic.

If you're really good -- you'll be able to exercise self control at the point of purchase and never accumulate unnecessary things to begin with, but that takes a lot of effort. In my opinion it is definitely worth making a conscious effort, so practice and keep at it. Also, always donate clothing instead of throwing it out -- it is a little bit of effort and can make a difference.
