Solo Travel
I'm sure I'm not the only one here who finds it difficult to coordinate fun trips/vacations with friends who also work full time. On top of the limited number of vacation days in early years of employment, it seems tough to schedule group trips with your boys from school, etc.
Anyone here into solo travel? One of my co-workers just did a solo-travel trip for a week, and it sounded awesome. They found a company that essentially focuses on people traveling solo and puts together an itinerary for them, provides meals, etc. I've seen a few of these services pop up for sailing trips, where you can rent a single or double cabin on a boat for a week and sail the Mediterranean, Thailand, and other locations.
What are you experiences traveling solo? Any services you'd recommend, places to go?
I travel solo all the time, mainly to central and South America, but I’ve also done Europe. Finding people who travel like you want to is a pain and as you’ve recognized, coordinating things with limited time off, cheap flights and a professional life is difficult.
I like to use Viator for tours and make friends as I go alone. If you want, staying at a hostel will probably help this process.
Solo travel isn’t for everyone, but I frankly prefer it. Nothing I hate more than waiting on someone to get ready. Someone complaining about food. Being too tired to do something. Etc.
This is very relevant to me. After business school, my friends went their separate ways, most got married. And even with my remaining single friends, it's nearly impossible to arrange trips because they are either too lazy to help plan or our schedules just don't mesh. I'm trying to plan a solo trip in August or September, preferably a place with lot of outdoor stuff. I live in the west coast, so Europe is probably too far. I'm looking for recommendations and travel companies I can use.

i went to costa rica for a week..went to surf camp...was amazing...hooked up with a few girls on a girls trip...dated one of them briefly
when traveling alone, you have a great lineup to approach girls at a bar and say something along the line of "hi, i'm on vacation...whats good here" and then just take it from there. southeast asia, central/south america...europe still good...lots of single travelers
Have traveled solo a lot since college and still do. Of course I prefer to travel (usually) with friends but sometimes I want to be on my own. Exploring by oneself and having that complete independence is in general, awesome. That said sometimes you just want to chill with a good buddy rather than be alone or have to deal with strangers again.
Rather than use companies, I use either Wikitravel or a Lonely Planet and make it up as I go along since they will list most historical/cultural things and have ideas on social things. Airbnb, cheap hotels, etc act as a base. I do reading before I leave and have an idea of what I want to do. I often read while I'm at base (ie my room) to clarify things and adjust as needed. I love food, but unless there is a must must do, I usually wing it. Ditto bars or whatever else.
My two cents are that I would think to ditch the company and do it on your own so it isn't scripted. Best way to experience things. Our lives are so scripted on a day to day basis, so wouldn't it be nice to get away from that?

I have never traveled solo outside of the U.S, but have taken a few trips recently just to get away by myself, when others schedules did not align. I would absolutely do it again.
Solo travel is a blast - you can do whatever you want whenever you want. If you're worried about being lonely/bored, stay in hostels (many have private rooms too) with organized activities like walking tours, dinners, pub crawls, etc. Great way to meet people that you can hang out with in that city while keeping the flexibility of solo travel. Pretty easy to pick good ones - just read reviews on hostelworld.
